UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SASH-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented sept. 18,1906.
Application filed October 24, 1905. Serial No. 284,228.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRISSON J. BAR- NETT, acitizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sash-holders, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which shall be cheap and simple in construction, convenient in operation, and durable in use.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a plan view of the device in its operative position, the upper sash being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the device being shown open. Fig. 3 is a vertical section, on an enlarged scale, on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a to plan view of the bottom plate. Fig. 5 is a ottom plan view of the same. Fig. 6 is a cross-section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a cross-section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the plate and lever detached from the sash, the pressureblock being removed.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the lower sash, and 2 the upper sash of a window. Upon said lower sash is secured, by means of a screw 3, the plate 4, which has formed therein at one corner two series of teeth 5 6, the series 5 extending outwardly from one side of the plate and theseries 6 from the other side. By this means of construction the plate may be used either side up, thus permitting the lock to be used either righthanded or left-handed. If the side seen in Fig. 4 be uppermost, then the series of teeth 5 will be used, as shown in Fig. 8; but if it be desired to turn the pressure-lever in the other direction to clamp the sashes then the plate will be inverted and the series of teeth 6 will come into operation. On said plate is pivotally secured by the same screw 3 which holds the plate to the sash a pressure-lever 7, which is formed all in one piece and has at the outer end a finger-piece 8 and at the other end is providedwith a box-like receptacle 9 to receive a block 10 of any suitable yielding substance or composition, as rubber or fiber.
With this construction the operation is as follows: To secure the sashes together, the operator presses the finger-piece to turn the lever from the position shown in Fig.2 to that shown in Fig. 1, the rear edge of the plate then passing in succession over the teeth 5 until the block 10 of yielding material is firmly pressed against. the sash. Said block is held firmly to the sash by said teeth. In order to unlock the sashes from each other, the outer end of the lever is lifted slightly by the finger-piece, so as to clear the teeth, and is then permitted to return to the position shown at Fig. 2. It will be observed that the main stem of the lever is concaved at the underside, as clearly shown at 11 in Fig. 3, the objectbeing to permit the lever to clear all the succeeding teeth of the series when its advancing edge has cleared any one tooth. It will also be observed that the lever-handle has a portion flat on the under side, as shown at 12, to facilitate the raising of the rear end of the lever, as well as a portion which is flat sidewise, as shown at 13, to facilitate the lateral movement.
The device is very simple and inexpensive to manufacture, consisting of only two main metallic parts, both of which can be easily stamped out from sheet metal. It is also convenient in use and can be used either right-handed or left-handed. It is also very durable, as the yielding blocks can be renewed from time to time. Moreover, by providing a series of teeth the device is selfadjusting, either for accuracy of attachment or for wear of the pressure-block, since one of the series of teeth will always be found to 7 provide a proper support for the block when pressing against the sash. The construction of the receptacle-for the pressure-block is also advantageous, as said receptacle surrounds the block on all sides except the front, and therefore holds it very firmly and immovably in position. The receptacle itself is also well supported against backward thrust by its connection with and arrangement upon the end of the lever.
I- claim 1. In a device of thecharacter described, the combination of a plate adapted to be secured to a window-sash, a lever swinging on said plate about a pivot at right angles thereto, and a pressure-block carried by said lever and adapted by the movement of the lever to be brought into contact with the other window-sash, said plate being provided with a series of stops preventing the return movement of the lever, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a horizontal edge of a window-sash, a plate secured thereto, a lever pivoted at one of its corners on the plate to swing horizontally on said corner, said lever having a handle for so swin ing the same, and having at its end next the other sash of the window a vertically-extending receptacle for a pressure-block, and a pressureblock therein, the plate having a catch or stop looking the'lever in the desired tion, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described,
posithe combination of a plate adapted to be see cured to a window-sash, and having two se ries of stops formed thereon, extending outward on opposite sides thereof, and a lever pivotally attached to said plate and swinging 4. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a plate adapted to be secured to a window-sash and having a series of stops extending upwardly therefrom, and a lever pivotally secured to said plate and adapted to swing in a plane parallel with the plate, the lower edge of the lever being adapted to be engaged by any one of the series of stops, the under side of the lever being concaved to permit the main body of the lever to pass freely over said stops, and a pressureblock carried by said lever, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my.
hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
M. J. BARNETT.
