To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN A. DALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cutting-Tools, of which the following is a specification.

's invention relates to cutting-tools designed especially for severing strap-metal and wire bale-ties, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character which in practice may be readily engaged with the bales to be cut and conveniently operated for performing its work and one'whereby a strap-metal tie and a wire tie may be acted upon simul taneously by the too With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool embodying the invention and showing the parts in the positions which they occupy at the beginning of the cutting operation. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the parts in their relative positions at the completion of the tie-cutting operation. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the tool with parts in the position seen in Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the tool handle or shank, provided at its rear end with a rip-knob or enlargement 2 and at its forward end with a flattened engaging portion or head 3 of substantially elliptical form, as shown, provided in its normally upper edge at a point adjacent its rear end with a w1re-receiVing seat or recess 4, there being formed in said head and to extend longitudinally thereof a forwardly-opening elongated slot or seat 5, one wall of which is provided adjacent the entrance opening or mouth 6 with an inwardly-projecting stop or abutment 7, for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.

Pivoted to and at a point adjacent the longitudinal center of the head 3 by means of a transverse pintle or bolt 8 is a shearing member or blade 9, of substantially elliptical form and provided with a curved projecting arm or tang 10 and having a main cutting edge 11 and an auxiliary cutting edge 12, the tang 10 being adapted when the parts are in normal position to project forwardly beyond the head 3, under which conditions the cutting edge 11 is disposed in rear of the slot 5 and the edge 12 in advance of clearly shown in Fig. 1.

In practice, the parts being in their normal relative positions, the tool is engaged with a strap-metal bale-tie by entering the latter through the mouth 6 into the slot or seat 5, a wire tie being at the same time arranged in the seat or recess 4. The operator then grasps and moves the handle 1 in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1 and from the position illustrated in said figure to that shown in Fig. 2, whereby the position of the head 3 relative to the blade 9 is reversed, thus causing the cutting edge 11 to act upon and sever the strap-metal disposed in the seat 5 and the edge 12 to sever the wire positioned in the seat 4, it being understood that durin the cutting operation the outer curved em? of tang 10 will bear on an adjacent portion of the bale and that the stop or projection 7 will engage the adjacent edge of the strap-metal tie to prevent its accidental. escape from the slot 5 It is to be particularly observed that in the operation of the device the strap-metal and wire bales will be simultaneously acted upon and that the cutting edges 11 and 12 will have a shearing action in severing the material.

From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a simple device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in View, it be ing understood that minor changes in the details herein set forth may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
