HOP TRIER.
Patented JRR. 30, 1894.

EMIL OLEMENS HORST, OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
HOP-TRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,789, dated January 30, 1894.
' Application tiled October 20, 1893. Serial No. l88,715. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL CLEMENS HORST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hop-Triers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hop triers, and has for its object to provide simple and effective means for pulling out hops from the middle of a bale of the same in a simple and effective manner.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.-
length, and preferably cylindrical in form having at its upper end a grip 2, and at its lower end a head 3, which is spear-shaped and has at the upper part thereof a beard or barb 4, from which and the adjacent portion of the shank the said head tapers to a point 5, and having its lower edge sharpened in the form of a knife as at 6. In the old form of trier, it was first necessary to cut the cloth or cover of the bale before it could be used and requiring the use of a knife or other device to perform` said operation. In the present instance this delayand operation is avoided by the formation of a lknife in connection with the head as set forth, and thereby the trier can be readily and quickly inserted through the bale covering by being rst used to sever the said covering a sufficient distance as will be seen.
Gf course it will be understood that the improved trier will be made of suitable metal or of a combination of metal and wood as may be desired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- The herein described trier having a head with a barb orbeard and a knife edge or cutter at the opposite side, said head being tapered to a point, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EMIL CLEMENS HORST.
