sind i @time Warsaw ARTHUR BARBARIN, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
Letters Patent No. 83,023, lated October 13, 1868.
IMPROVED SHOEMAKERS' IMPLEMENT.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part 0f the Same- To whom it ma/y concern.
Be it known that I, ARTHUR BARBARIN, oi' New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and improved Shoemakers Implement; and I hereby declare'the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure lis a perspective view of a tool made in accordance with my invention, and
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same, the handle being represented in section. l
The object of my invention 'is to combine in a simple and convenient manner, in one tool or implement, such devices as the Shoemaker most requires in cutting out, and fitting and securing together, the diiierent pieces of which a shoe or bootis composed. To this end, I attach to a metal shank, provided with a suitable handle, a head, resenibling in some degree an ordinary hammer-head. Upon one end of this is formed the ordinary nail-driving head, preferably combined with claws, and upon the opposite end is secured a circular cutter, capable of rotating. I also, in some instances, form the end of the shank into a screwdriver, and make the handle hollow, so that it may be used as a receptacle for the tacks or nails used in shoemaking or other work. In this manner, I combine in one tool many implements, and thus enable the workman to fashion, form, and secure his Inaterialsmore expeditiously, and wuth' much less trouble than otherwise would be practicable.
The nature of my invention will, however, be better understood by reference to the drawings.
The metal shank A is attached to its handle B in any ordinary or suitable manner. I prefer, on some accounts, to give the shank a gimlet-point, as shown in iig. 2, whichis screwed with great ease into the wooden handle; "Upon the upper end or' the shank is mounted the piece, C, one end, D, of which is shaped like an ordinary hammer-head, and upon this-end I place the claws E, in the position shown in the drawings, as being the most convenient for use. Ihey may, however, be formed on anydesired part of'the head U. The opposite end, F, oi' the piece O is slotted, andv between the arms thus formed is 'placed a circular cutting disk, G, which is mounted, and has a rotary movement on the pin a, which passes through the arms F andthe centre ofthe circular cutter. In some instances, I prefer to have the shank A project beyond the head, and to form this projecting end into a screwdriver, H, which may also be used for a tack-lifter, and may have formed in it one or more notches or nicks, to answer the purpose of claws. It willalso be found advantageous to recess the handle at I, the chamber thus formed being used for holding the tacks, nails, or other articles required. 'Ihe chamber is closed by a screw-plug, J. rIhe handle may, however, be made either solid or hollow, as preferred.
It will be seen that a tool oi' this description combines in itseliman y advantages. implement, the'workman can cut and shave his inaterial, nail the dili'ercnt parts together, and insert or remove the necessary screws, periorming all those operations with great ease and expedition.
The implement is also vcry useful for the purpose of putting down carpets, and when designed for such use, the screw-driver may be dispensed with.
lfaving now described my invention, and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into eiiect,
What I claim., and desire to secure by ALetters Patent, is-
As anew article of manufacture, a tool, the shank and handle of which are combined with the hanuncrhead, claws, and rotary cutting-disk, with or without the screw-driver, in the manner and i'or thc purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this speciiication before two subscribing witnesses.
Altill Ult BARBAIiI-N. fitncsses z M. BAILEY,
Een. F. BROWN.
