No. 830,153. PATENTED SEPT. 4, 1906- P. KLEINVOGBL.
DRIVING MECHANISM.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 12.1006.
Alfarrley FRIEDRICH KLEINVOGEL, OF NEIVPORT, KENTUCKY.
DRIVING MECHANISM.
No. sso,153.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1906.
Application filed June 12, 1905. Serial No. 264,801.
To all 1071 0727 it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH KLEIN- VOGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving Mechanism with Alternately-Acting Levers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to mechanisms driven by foot-power by means of two levers arranged on both sides of a seat and acted upon alternately, and the motion is employed for the propulsion of vehicles for pumping or for any other purpose.
An ordinary lever fulcrumed at one end and having a pedal for foot-power at the other end requires a large stroke in acting on a crank of any part of machinery. It is the object of this invention to decrease the stroke of the lever or to admit of the use of a largercrank-arm, so that the power may be transferred more easily. To this end a treadlelever is connected with a special lever system, as hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a carriage to which the new lever system is applied. Fig. 2 shows the lever system separately in the highest position, and Fig. 3 shows the same in the lowest position.
A frame a of any suitable shape and material is provided in the ordinary way with the front axle 6, having wedged thereto at one end a driving-wheel and at the other end a loose wheel 0 c. In the rear smaller wheels (Z (Z are provided, being connected in any suitable manner with a steering device e in front of a seat f, resiliently supported on the frame.
Motion is transferred to the aXle b by means of sprocket-wheels g h and a chain '5. (Indicated in Fig. 1 in dotted lines.) A flywheel k may be arranged on the frame and connected with the mechanism to even out the motion. The shaft of the sprocketwheel g has a crank l on each end, the crankpins being provided with rollers 'm, and on these rollers the mechanism to be now described is acting, thereby producing motion of the vehicle. To the rear of the frame the treadle-levers are pivoted at m, having at the forward end a treadle in the vicinity of the seat f.
Springs 0 can be employed to draw the levers into an elevated position.
Arms p are pivotally connected to the frame somewhat in front and below the pivots n, and at their upper ends triangles g are hinged, the forward corners of which are pivotally connected with the treadle-levers m by means of links r. s is a lever hinged to the front part of the frame and having at its rear ends two pivots s and the upper one, 8, being connected by a link if to the forward corner of the triangle g and the lower one, 8 being connected by a link a to the lower corner of the triangle g.
The levers 3 act directly on the rollers m of the cranks. When a treadle-lever is in the highest position and the corresponding lever sis elevated, the pressure of the foot is transferred upon the same by means of the triangle 9 and the link a pulling the lever 8 down, While the link 1. at the beginning of the motion cannot act on the lever 8. When approaching to the lower position, the triangle g, receiving the pull of the treadle-lever n, gradually ceases its pull on the lever s by means of link a and presses the same down by means of the link 15, as can be easily seen from Figs. 2 and 3.
The upper pivot of the link 7 is arranged near the upper pivot of the link If, and the throw of the lever s with the transfer on the crank-pins may be varied at will by varying more or less the distance of the pivot of link 1 from the front corner of the triangle g.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a frame, of a shaft carried by the frame and having at its ends crank-arms provided with rollers, levers pivoted to the frame and engaging the rollers of the crank-arms; treadle-levers, and connections interposed between the treadle-levers and the crankengaging levers, each connection comprising an element pivoted to the frame and links connecting the pivoted element to a treadle-lever and to a crank-engaging lever.
2. The combination with a frame; of a driven shaft mounted thereon; a drivingshaft having at each end a crank-arm provided with a roller; a fly-wheel rotatably supported upon the frame; sprocket-wheels and coacting chains adapted to transmit motion from the driving-shaft to the driven shaft and to the fly-wheel; crank-operating IIO levers pivoted to the frame and engaging by rolling contact the rollers of the crank-arms treadle-levers pivoted to the frame; triangle connections each pivoted at a vertex to a bar hinged to the frame, and connected by links at the other vertexes to a crank-actuating lever, and links connecting the treadle-levers to the triangular connections.
3. The combination With a support, of an actuated lever pivoted thereto, an operatinglever pivoted to the support, and a triangular connection pivoted to the support and connected .to the actuated lever and to the operating-lever.
4. The combination with a support, of an actuated lever pivoted thereto, an operatinglever pivoted to the support, a triangular connection pivoted at one vertex to an arm hinged to the support, and connected by links, at the other vertexes, to the actuated lever; and a link connecting the operatinglever With the triangular connection.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FRIEDRICH KLEINVOGEL.
