No. 698,609. Patented Apr. 29, I902,"
H. T. WILBER- SPEED REGULATOR.
(Application filed July 24, 1901.)
(No M01191.)
INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT Grater.
HERBERT T. WILBER, OF DOROHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPEED-REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,609, dated April 29, 1902.
Application filed July 24, 1901.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT T. WILBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dorchester, in the county of Suffolk and Stateof Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Speed-Regula tors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
This invention relates to mechanism for regulating the speed of motor-vehicles and other machinery; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional side View of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the guides removed. Fig.
3 is a detail side view of one of. the frictionclutches. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same.
Ais a support-ing frame.
B isa crank-shaft journaled in the frame and provided with an actuating crank b, which is connected to any approved motor or source of power. A toothed pinion b is se-. cured on the crank-shaft B;
O is a driving-shaft also journaled' in the frame A, and c is a toothed wheel secured on the shaft 0 and gearing into the pinion b.
D represents two cranks secured on the end portions of the shaft C and set at a right angleto each other. i
E represents radius rods or links pivoted at one end to the shaft 0.
F represents curved links, which are pivoted at one end to the free ends of the radiusrods, and 6 represents connecting-rods driven by the cranks D and pivoted to the other ends of the links from the radius-rods by pins d.
G is a rock-shaft journaled in the frame A, and g are arms secured on the said rock-shaft and pivotally connected with the lower parts of the curved links F by hangers g.
G is an arm which is also secured on the rock-shaft.
H is the regulating lever, which is pivoted to the frame A and provided with a toothed plate It and a catch it for holding it in position.
H is a rod which pivotally connects the lever H with the arm G. The lever regulates Serial No. 69,500- (No model-l l the speed by raising or lowering the curved links, thereby changing the length of the strokes of the cross-heads, which are operated by the said links, as hereinafter more fully described.
oted on pins 1 projecting from the crossheads I. J represents shafts journaled longitudinally in the frame A and provided with screw-threads j of very great pitch, which I work in screw-threaded sockets j in the said cross-heads. The crossheads oscillate the I shafts. J as they are slid back and forth upon them, the said shafts being revolved in one direction during each front stroke and in the reverse direction during each back stroke.
K represents beveled toothed wheels secured on the shafts J.
, M is a power-shaft which is also journaled in the frame A, and m represents frictionclutches secured on the said shaft. Beveled toothed wheels at and n are journaled on the shaft M in pairs, each pair gearing into one of the wheels K. Each wheel 7t and n is coupled to the shaft M by its friction-clutch m when the wheel is revolved in the right direction to cause the clutch to be operative; but the said wheels are not connected to the shaft when they are revolved in the reverse direction. The friction-clutches are of any approved construction, and those shown consist of a disk provided with eccentric flanges 0 and rollers 0, which are held in contact with the said flanges and the hubs p of the beveled wheels at and n by springs p.
The power-shaft M is revolved continuously in one direction by the wheels at and n, which operatealternately through their respective friction-clutches.
P is a sprocket-Wheel for driving the vehihicle or other'machine to which this regulating mechanism is applied. This sprocketwheel P is mounted loosely on the powers shaft M, and it is provided with a beveled toothed wheel Q and a clutch member q.
R is a sleeve which is splined to the powershaft M and provided with clutch members 1 and 8" at its ends. The clutch members q and q engage with each other, and the clutch too to the frame A and which engages with the sleeve B. This reversing-lever may be operated from any part of the machine by means of suitable connections. The speed of the sprocket-wheel is regulated by means of the regulating-lever H withoutchanging the speed of the motor.
What I claim is- 1. The combination, with a driving-shaft provided with a crank, ofaslidable cross-head provided with a screw-threaded socket, adjustable link mechanism connecting the said crank and cross-head and permitting the stroke of the cross-head to be varied, an oscillatory screw threaded shaft operated by the said socket, a beveled toothed wheel secured on the said shaft, a power-shaft, beveled toothed wheels mounted on the said powershaft and gearing into the said beveled toothed wheel on opposite sides thereof, and clutches between the said beveled toothed wheels and the power-shaft whereby the said power-shaft is revolved continuously, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a driving-shaft provided with two cranks set at an angle to each other, of slidable cross-heads provided with screw-threaded sockets, link mechanisms connecting the said cross heads and cranks, means for shifting the link mechanisms simultaneously to change the stroke of the cross-heads, oscillatory screw-threaded shafts operated by the said sockets, beveled toothed wheels secured upon the said shafts, a power-shaft,beveled toothed wheels mounted in pairs on the power-shaft and gearing into the said beveled toothed wheels on opposite sides thereof, and clutches between the said pairs of beveled toothed Wheels and the powershaf t whereby the said power-shaft is revolved continuously, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a driving-shaft provided with a crank, of a slidable crosshead provided with a screw-threaded socket, a radius-rod pivoted to the said shaft, a curved link pivoted at one end to the said radius-rod, a connecting-rod between the other end of the said link and the said crank, a block pivoted to the cross-head and engaging with the said link, means for shifting the said link so as to vary the stroke of the cross-head, and an oscillatory screw-threaded shaft operated by the said socket, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERBERT T. VVILBER.
