UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC".
JACOB C. GOSE, OF REELSVILLE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO RICHARD H. BO\VEN, OF PUTNAMVILLE, INDIANA.
MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,858, dated September 4, 1888.
Application filed October 31, 1987.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAcoB (J. GosE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reelsville, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to motors actuated by hand and foot power; and it consists in the improved contrivance hereinafter described, whereby a simple and eflicient construction is presented that will be suitable for driving roadvehicles, light machinery, &c.
In thcaccompanying drawings, forming part of the specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a motor embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
The supporting-frame of the machine consists of a base-piece and end sections, A B. The end sections, A and B, are connected and braced together at their upper ends, respecttively, by cross-bars a and a. The section A consists of two standards, each of which comprises two parallel beams, b and 0, while the section B comprises but two standards, (1 and c.
0 represents longitudinally-inclincd bars,
secured at one end to the standards and hav- 0 ing their front portions extending beyond the sections A. The front portions of said bars 0 are slotted, as shown at c, for the purpose hereinafter explained.
I) represents a cross-bar connecting the for- 5 ward ends of the bars 0.
A top bar, E, connects the front and rear sections, and, as represented, is curved to carry a seat, f, for the operator.
Bearing in the standards (I e is a shaft, F,
0 the projecting ends of which are bent to form oppositely-extending cranks g g, each carrying a horizontal wrist-pin, h, at its outer end. A gear-wheel, G, between the standards d e, is mounted to rotate with the shaft F and mesh with a pinion, i, above on a shaft, H, journaled in a bearing, j, located upon the upper side and near the rear end of one of the side bars 0. A wheel, I, is located on the end of said shaft H, which may be a sprocket or belt wheel to transmit power.
Serial No. 253,976. (No model.)
Although actuating-levers are located on both sides of the machine, they differ only in relative positions to accord with the oppositely-extending cranks 9, so that it will only therefore be necessary to describe the construc tion and arrangement of one side in order to understand both.
An extended pitman, J, is connected to the crank 57, and extends forwardly between the beams b c, where it is connected pivotally to the lower bifurcated end of a vertical arm, A, the upper end of which is pivotally connected by a horizontal link, Z, with the lower end of a hand-lever, L, hung on the cross bar a between the beams b 0.
An extended brackctstrip, M, is secured on the outer side of each beam 0, and is curved outward, as shown in Fig. 2, to form a vertical guide space between it and the side of the beam 0. A pin, m, receives the bracket and 7e enters the beam to form a pivot, upon which is mounted a lever, N, having a bent inner end,
0, to form a pedal for the operators foot, while its outer end is pivotally connected by a link,
P, with the forward end of a beam, 0, ccntrally pivoted in the side bar (1, and pivotally connected by a link, (1, with the wrist-pin I: of the crank 9.
As will be seen, the forward portion of the beam 0 plays in the space between the bracket strips M and adjacent beam.
The operation of the machine will be readily understood. The operator occupies the sea f, so as to alternately depress the pedals and vibrate the levers L L, which results in the pitmen Jand beams O, actuating the cranks g, to rapidly and easily rotate the gear-wheel G, so as to rapidly drive the pinion I and its beltwheel. The construction of the actuating devices is such that a comparatively slight excrtion will, by reason of the larger leverage, rapidly rotate the gear-wheel and its pinion.
I claim- 1. The combination, with the supportingframe, of the drive-shaft provided with oppo- 5 sitely-cxtending cranks and with links q, pivoted to the outer epds of said cranks, the oppositely'extending hand-levers, the pitmanbars connected to the cranks and to the levers, and foot-levers having footconncctions with pivoted beam having its front portion guided 10 by a bracket-strip and link-eonnections, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JAC( B C. GOSE.
oted to links q, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the supportingframe having the front and rear sections, the former consisting of standards formed of pairs of beams, of the drivesnafb having the oppositely-extending eran'ks,the oppositely-exiending hand and foot levers, pitmanbars guided between said standard-beams, and a centrally- Vi tnesses:
