JOI-IN I. HESS, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 82,948, dated October 13, 1868; antedcted September 26,1868.
IMPROVEMENT m HOT-AIR FURNACES.
-4. 4 4 The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all ivhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN .l. Hnss, of the city of Philznlelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Furnaces, and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a filll, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s, making a part of this specification, in which Plate 1, Figure l, is a perspective view ofmy furnace.
Plate 1, Figure 2, is a sectional view of drmns.
Plate .1, Figure 3, is a sectional view through a-b.
Plate 2, Figure 4, is a plan of the bed-plate.
Plate 2, Figure 5, is an end view of same.
Plate 2, Figure 6, is plan view of the turn-table, on which the grate rests and revolves.
Plate 2, Figure 7, is an edge view of same.
Plate 2, Figure 8, is a view of the grate, with'the bars removed.
Plate 2, Figure 9, is an edge view of same.
Plate 2, Figure 10, is a view of the water-basin or evaporator.
Plate 2, Figure 11, isa side view of same.
The object of my invention consists in constructing a hot-air furnace that will throw out a moist, Wholesome air, and give out the full benefit, in heat, of the amount of coal consumed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1 will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I make the bed-plate B P in the shape as shown in fig. 4, and on the outer edge provide it with openings for the admission of coldair. On a line with the centre are two openings, F O and D 0. The opening F O is encircled by a flange, made larger in diameter, so as to leave a space between it (the flange) and the edge of the opening, for fire-tile. l) O is also encircled by a flange on the edge of the opening. ()n a line with the centre of the openings F O and D O are cast four flanges, two elliptic and two circular; Underneath, and encircling the opening F O, and secured to the bottom of the bed-plate B P, is a turn-table, on which the grate revolves, said turn-table being made in two parts, L P'and T P, figs. 6 and 8. Part L P is made circular, and the rim rounded out in the centre, and divided into four or more compartments, each compartment containing one or more balls. A recess is also tbrmed in the front part, to prevent the part T P from turning too-far when the handle is inserted. Part T P is simply a fiat rim,. provided with a ing on the front part, said lug being made so as to work freely in the recess above described. The grate-bars are inserted in the part T P, and the whole placed together and seem-ed, as shown in dotted lines, fig. 4. It will'be seen that by this arrangement of the grate, that the entire fire-space will be left open when the fire-tile is in place.
F U is an ordinary fire-chamber, and is set on the flange of the opening F 0. Connected therewith, by
means of pipes P and P are two elliptical-shaped heater-drums, H D and .H D, and connected with said drums, at the lower part, by pipes P and P are .two circular drums, 0 D and O D. immediately in the rear of the fire-chamber F U, and set on the flange of the opening 1) O, is a pipe, P, fig. 3, the upper end of which connects with a horizontal (ll'lllIl, S D. Circular rh'ums O D and O D are connected to drum S D by means of pipes P and P. Drum S D connects with the flue of the chimney by means of pipe P Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the elliptical and circular drums, showing the arrangement of the spirals placed therein, for the pin-pose of checking and retaining the heat, so that there will be very little heat wasted by escaping into the chimney-flue, consequently all the fuel consumed is made available to heating the apartments. Encircling the lower part of the firechamber F O is a water-basin or evaporator, W B, (figs. 10 and 11,) made in two or more parts, and-c0n-' nected by means ofpipes. The upper part is left open for evaporation, and the Water supplied to it by means of pipes of ordinary construction. The furnace, when set, is enclosed with brick walls, in the usual manner, with openings and partitions in the bottom to correspond to the openings in the bed-plate.
Operation: The fire is made in the fire-chamber F O, the products of combustion passing up and into the upper part of the heating-(harms H D and H D, by means of pipes P P'. It now descends and follows around the spirals, as shown by arrows, until it reaches the lower part of said drums, when it passes into drums O D and U D, by means of the pipes P and P and,
ascends to the top of the drums O D and, O D, the
smoke passing through pipes P and P into drum S D, and thence into the chimney-flue. The heat will be retained in the drums by means of the spirals.
The lower part of pipe I is left open, and a communication is made with the ash-pit, so that when the fire israked, the dust from the ashes will pass up into it. By this means all the inconvenience experienced by the dust passing up through the register is avoided.
Having thus described my invention, its construction and operation,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. The combination and arrangement of bed-plate B P, fire-chamber F O, heating-drums H D and H D, and O D and G D, with their spirals, connecting-pipes P, P, P, P", P31, P", and P turn-table, composed of parts L l and T P, water-box V B, for the purpose specified.
2. The application of the within-described turn-table to stoves or other heating-apparatus, for the purpose specified.
