IMPROVEMENT IN .PURNACES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SHDLL, of Burlington, New Jersey, have invented certain improvements-in Furnaces and Flues for Boilers, Ovens, ete. and I do hereby declare the'following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same.
My invention consists of the combination ofa boiler or oven, a fire-box enclosed in an air-chamber, and a flue or passage through which heated air from the said chamber is caused to traverse, in contact with those parts of the boiler or oven not heated directly by theV gases from the fire-place; and the invention further consists in the combination of the above and a. flue for conveying the air, after its passage round the boiler or oven, to the fire-place, where it assists in consuming the gases.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will no w proceed to describe the mode of carrying the sameinto eifect, reference being had to the aceompanyngdrawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical elevation of a furnace and steam-boiler with my improvements.

The outer casing of the furnace consists of the side walls or plates A A, the frontend back walls or plates B B', and the curved top C; and within this casing is a cylindrical boiler, D, a horizontal ilue, a, whichv communicates at the front end with avertical pipe or chimney, a', extending through the shell of the boiler and through the top ofthe furnace. vThe fire-place of the furnace, below the front end of the boiler, consists of two oblong fire-boxes E E, which are situated within an air-chamber, X, and which have the usual grates b b; and inthe front wall or plate Bof the furnace are openings 2:, through which the air can pass to the chamber X. At each side of the furnace is ajaeket or casing, F, which is divided by a vertical partition, e, into two iues or passages y y', the former communicating through an opening, u, iig. 4, with the chamber X, and the latter through an opening, s, with the re-place, iig. 3. Between the top of the boiler and the arched top ofthe furnace extend three partitions t t t', which are arranged as shown in iig. 7, so as to form at each side of the central partition t two parallel ues or passa-ges Y Y', communicating with each other near the rear end of the boiler, the lues Y communicating with the passages y, and thc ues Y communicating with the passages y', fig. 2. Between the rear end of the boiler and the wall or plate B' of the furnace, above the ilue a, is a partition, n, fig. 1. The products of combustion from the fire-place pass beneath the boiler to the Hue a, and through the latter to the pipe a', heating the lower portion of theiboiler and its contents. VThe air which enters the chamber X becomes highly heated and passes through the openings u and passages y and ues Y to the rear end of theboiler, then back to the front end ofthe latter, through the ilues Y', and thence downward through the passages y', and through the'openings s, to the fire-place, fig. 2, where it aids in effecting a perfect combustion of the gases.
By this arrangement the heat radiated from the fire-boxes, which would otherwise be wasted, is utilized for heating those parts of the boiler which are generally exposed tothe air, or are covered with jackets of felt or other material, while a thorough consumption of the products of combustion is effected within the fire-place and beneath the boiler.
This invention is applicable to vertical boilers, open tanks, and drying or baking-ovens, the ues in each case being arranged in such a manner as may be best-adapted for distributing the heat to the parts where it is required.
Without coniining myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts herein described, I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of a boiler or oven with a firebox enclosed in an air-chamber, and a Hue or passage through which heated air from thesaid chamber is caused to traverse, in contact with those parts of the boiler not heated directly by the produets of combustion described.
