J. Lgoss. .COLUMN CLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED MAB. 13. 1906.
Afro/mf ys' To' all w/wm, it may concern:
5 of Indiana, have invented a new and Inproved Column-Clamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
This invention is an improvement in column-clamps, and has for an object, among` others, to provide a clamp which can be easily and quickly operated both in applying to and removing from columns or other bodies where al lexible clamp is desired. It is especially designed to be operated by lever mechanism which can be attached and detached after the clamp is applied, thereby lessening the weight of the clamped article 'and at the same time allowing the lever mechanism to be used in applying other clamps.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the vfigures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved clamp and operating mechanism when applied to a column. Fig. 2 is an end elevation o f the clamp viewed in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1 when detached from the column. Fie'. 3 is a sectional view7 on `an enlarged sca e, on the line 8 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the clamp applied to a .column with the leverapplying mechanism omitted.
The numeral 1 indicates a bar having a hooked member 2 at one end and pins 3 near each end passing through the bar and projecting beyond each side thereof. Between the pins 3 is slidably mounted on the bar 1, through a slot 4, a clamping-block 5, bifurcated at its lower end at 6, through which extends a in 7 for connecting a chain 8 or lile' connection with the hooked member 2, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 4 The pins 3 are for limiting the movement of Specification of Letters Patent.

tached from Vthe bar and used for as many clamps as desired. mechanism consists of levers'9 and 10, pivotally attached"y to a supporting-block 11 by pins 12 and 13, respectively. The 'block 11 is bifurcated at its upper end for containing a cam 10a at the endof lever 10, and the lever is provided with a pin 14 for contactin in a recess at the upper end of the block in order to limit its movement in the direction of lever 9. The block 11 near its center has a slot 11, enlarged at both'sides, forming a prolongation of the bifurcation at the upper end of the block, the enlargements'permitting the block to be slipped on the bar 1 past the pins 3. The lever 9 at the point 15 applying is made up of two branches 9a to permit vthe bar 1 and block 11 to pass therebetween in order that it may vnot contact with the 4bar and can be pivotally attached t the su 11 at each side and below t e'f' ortinq-block ar 1 by the pin 12. Each of the branches 9a beyond the pivotal connection 12 is provided at its end with a cam 16 for forcing the clamping-block along the bar 1 when the supporting-block 11 is secured thereto.
To operate the clamp, the chain 8 ispassed and pulled tight about the body desired to be clamped'and the hooked member 2 connected to the adjacent chain-link 8a. The supporting-block 11 is then slipped over the bar 1 and placed as close to theclamping-block 5 as convenient. The lever is then asped by the left hand and pushed from the ever 9, which, through cam 10, clamps the block 11 to the lbar 1. At this point the lever 9,
vwhich is held by the ri ht hand, is ulledA in the opposite direction, orcing the c ampingblock 5 at its bottom toward the The clamping-block Will not when forced in this position slide backward on the bar 1 on account of the bight formed between them at the point 5a. This operation of the lever mechanism can be repeated, if necessary, by slidin it toward the` block 5 when released from t e bar 1 and clamping it in its new position to exerturther tension on the chain 8. The block 11 is thenreleased from the bar 1 and with the attached levers 9 and 10 slipped from the clamp and can now be used for applying any other clamps, if desired. When it becomes'necessary to remove the clamp from the body to which it is attached, strike the upper edge of the clampingblock 5 with a hammer at the point marked 18, which disengages the bight 5a,al1owing This lever hook 2.

the block to be slip ed back on the bar and hl clamp removed `om the column or other It should be noted that the clampingblock 5 has a rounded lower edge to prevent the marring of the column or other body clamped.
It is evident that numerous changes and modifications can be made in the structure hereinbefore described, and I desire to haveit understood that Iclaim all such as fall within a fair interpretation of the annexed claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of a bar, a hook at one end of the bar, a clamping-block slidable on the bar, means for limiting the movement of the clamping-block on the bar, a flexible connection between the hook and the clampingblock, a supporting-block slidable on the bar, a lever pivoted at each end ofthe supportingblock, and a cam .carried at the end of eac lever, one of said cams for clamping the supporting-block to the bar and the other of said cams for forcing the clamping-block toward the hook.
2. The combination of a bar, a clampingblock movable with respect to the bar, a flexible connection between the bar and block, a supporting means applicable to the bar, a lever having a cam clamping the supporting means to the bar, and a second lever pivoted to the supporting means for operating the clamping-block.
3. The combination of a bar, a clampingblock slidable on the bar, a exible connection between the bar and clamping-block, a supporting-,block adjustable on the bar, means for clamping the supporting-block to the bar, and means carried b the support ing-block for operating the c amping-b ook.
4. In a clamping device, a bar, a clampingblock slidable on the bar, a flexible connection for connectin the bar and the block, a supporting-block s idable on the bar, a lever pivoted at each end of the sup orting-block,
and means whereby when one ever is moved in one direction the supporting-block is secured to the bar, and when the other lever is moved in the opposite direction, the clamping-block is moved on the bar.
5. The combination of a bar, a clampingblock slidable thereon, means connecting one end of the bar with the clamping-block, a supporting-block adjustable on the bar, means carried by the supporting-block for clamping it in adjusted position on the bar, and means carried on the supporting-block for operating the clamping-block.
6. The combination of a bar, a clampingblock slidable thereon, means for limiting the sliding movement of the block at each end of the bar, means connecting one end of the bar with the clamping-block, a supporting-block adjustable on the bar, means carried by the supporting-block for securing it in adjusted position on the bar, and means carried on the supporting-block for operating the clamping-block.
7. The combination of a bar, a clampingblock slidable thereon, a flexible connection connecting one end of the bar with one end of the clamping-block, a supporting-block adjustable on the bar, a lever having a cam pivoted in the supporting-block for locking the supporting-block in adjusted position, and a second lever pivoted to the supportingblock having a cam end for bearing on the clamping-block, for sliding it on the bar, for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOI-IN LEROY GOSS.
