FREDvB. POTTER, OF LOSANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
BENnrNG Dnvrcn ron Piras Ann BARS.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRED B. POTTER, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bending Devices for Pipes and Bars, of which the following is a specication.
It is the object of this invention to provide means for bending pipes and bars so arranged as to permit of the ready insertion of a pipe or bar into the bending apparatus and also providing for the quick interchanging of the members against which the pipes or bars are bent so as to accommodate the device for various sizes of pipes or bars.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a device of this character having grooved members arranged toengage a pipe or bar and so constructed that the pipe or bar will be supported in spaced relation from the bottoms of the grooves in order to prevent flattening of the pipes or bars as they are bent.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figs, 2, 3, and 4 are enlarged sections on the lines 2 2, 3-3 and 4 4 of Fig. 1.
The improved bending apparatus comprises a base 1 which is suitably mounted upon a support and adapted to have detachable end members 2 connected thereto. These end members are provided with curved surfaces 3 against which the pipes or bars are bent, and said curved surfaces are provided with grooves 4 adapted to receive the pipes or bars. The end members 2 are interchangeable so as to provide a device for bending pipes and the like of various sizes,
' and the interchangeable members are preferably held in position against base 1 by means of a tongue 5 extending from the base and received in a recess 6 in the rear surface of the end member. The base is provided with a lip 7 overlapping the end member and adapted to be connected thereto as by the bolt The pipe, or the like, which is to be bentL is shown at 9 and is clamped againstbase 1 at one end of the grooved end member 2 so that the projecting end of the pipe may be bent around the end member Specification of Letters Patent. Patniged Jian@ 13 1922.

and into the groove formed therein. The means for clamping the pipe preferably includes a lower jaw 10 fixed tothe base 1 and an upper jaw 1l mounted upon` a threaded shank 12 received through a threaded bearing 18 formed as an extension of base 1. rIhe threaded shank may be rotated in any suitable manner as by the handle 14 provided upon the end of the same.
An arm 15 is pivoted to base 1 and is adapted to engage the projecting end of pipe 9 so as to bend the same around end member 2. This arm is pivoted to the base vmember eccentrically with relation to the curvature of end member 2 as by the stud 1.6, and the swinging end of the arm has a roller 17 journaled therein, as shown at 18, and-provided with a grooved periphery 19. The roller is adapted to engage pipe 9 within the grooved periphery of the roller and bend the same into the O'rooved periphery of end Vmember 2. b
In order to prevent flattening of pipe 9` when pressure is thus applied to the same, the grooves 4 and 19 are preferably restricted at their outer edges as shown at 20, so that the pipe 9, or the like, received therein will be supported by said restricted edges and thereby held out of engagement with the bottoms of the grooves, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4. It will be noted that the eccentric mounting of arm 15 will cause roller 17 to move away from pipe 9 as the arm is swung upwardly, and a space is thus provided for permitting of the ready insertion of a pipe in the clamp formed by jaws 10 and 11.
vVarious changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A bending device comprising a base, a tongue formed on one end of the base, alip provided on the base adjacent the tongue, an end member having a recess formed therein adapted to receive said tongue, a fastening member extending through said lip and end member, a roller sustained eccentrically on said base for swinging movement, there being restricted grooves formed in said end member and roller, and vmeans for clamping a pipe to said base.
2. A bending device comprising a base, a tongue formed on one end of the base, a lip provided on the base adjacent the tongue, an end member having a recess formed 42 v A 1,419,755 Y therein adapted to receive said tongue, a a second jaw, and athreaded shank mounted fastening member extending through said in the base and connected to the second j aw 10 lip and end member, a roller sustained eofor adjustably sustaining the latter with recentrieally on said base for swinging movespeot tothe first j aw. ment, there being restricted grooves formed ,In testimony whereof I have signed my in said end member and roller, a clampfor name to this speoioation. seouringa pipe'to said base comprising a jew disposed tangentially of said end member, y rFRED B. POTTER.
