JOSEPH GOLDENBERG, OF CINCINNATI. OHIO;
' PlPE-BENDING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,943, dated anuary 1, 190i.
Application filed June 20, 1900. Serial No. 21,004. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, JOSEPH GOLDENBERG,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Oincinuati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use- I ful Improvements in Pipe-Bending Devices;
and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
My invention relates to vices.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved device of this character having a pipe-bending devise-frame adapted to admit between its jaws crooked or uneven pipe, as well as straight pipe of varying diameter, and to serve independently as avise for such when needed for threading, fitting, or manipulating the same.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4is a top plan vlew.
' Referring more particularly to the drawings, A denotes a casting forming the body of the device,having a base A provided with lagscrews a for securing it to a board or plank. A denotes a lug formed on the upper end of I said body, A a lug formed on its face, and A a lug formed on the side of said body.
B denotes the vise-frame, consisting of two parallel arms B B rigidly secured at one end to a screw-threaded sleeve or tap B placed between them, which receives the screw-spindle 0, having a head 0, in which is fitted a sliding lever 0'.
D denotes the movable jaw of the device. It is an oblong casting, as shown in'Fig. 4, having flanges d d upon its upper and lower sides, which embrace the vise-arms B B and serve'to hold the jaw true as it slides between said arms.
This jaw is attached to the screw 0 by aset-screw c denotes a pivot-bolt passing through the arm B of the vise and also through the lug in Fig. 4, forming a bending-head;
bolt 10'.
d d denote set-screws which pass through" jaw -D and are secured to dies, as hereinafter A on the body A. Thus the vise-frame is hinged to said body and is held in place thereon by the latch E engaging the lug A G denotes a die secured to the jaw D. by screw-bolts d d, as shownin Figs. 2and 3, and provided with a semicircular groove g, as shown in. Fig. 3. H denw as a die provided with a like groove h, arranged opposite and registering with the groove g. The die H is secured to the body A by screw-bolts h h. The die H is longer than the die G, and its extended end is curvedorarc-shaped,as shown The inner curved side of this die bears againstthe lug A. out the length of the dies and form together a circular channel for the passage of the pipe, the entrance to which is shown in Fig. 3, (marked X.) K denotes a pipe-bending lever pivoted to the lug A by bolt is and having a pivoted die L secured thereto by pivot- The die L is formed with an .arcshaped groove, which faces or registers with the grooves in the dies Gand H. K denotes an arm bolted to said lever and connected to the pivot-bolts k forming with the inner The grooves g and 71 extend through die L. The arcs described by the radii drawn from the centers of the bolts Zola to the outer edges of the diesG and L are the same, so
that any movement of, the lever will cause the die L to ride over the arc-shaped end or bending-head of the die H.
It is evident that myinvention can be used as a pipe-vise for holding pipe, and as the dies G and H are detachable other dies may be attached for pipes of varying diameters.
The operation of bending a pipe is as follows: If the pipe be straightand of proper diameter, it is inserted in the opening X and pushed through until the end to be bent projects out beyond the two dies G and H, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. The lever is then turned to the position shown in full lines, which causes the die L to turn or bend the pipe around the bending-head of. the die H to a full half-circle or to any smaller are, if desired,by turning the lever only part way. It the pipe to be bent is not straight, by releasing thelatch E the vise-frame, turning on its pivotal connection at A, can be lowered or swung outward from the bddy A, than separoe retingorenlarging the space between the dies 1 portien carrying the sliding jaw oi the vise,
G and H sufficiently to admit the pipe, when it *ean be clamped in position by the screw C preparatory to bending it.
l-Iaving shown and described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the body portion of a bending device having an elongated pipe-enxo gagingdie, a vise-frame hinged to said body and means for securing said jaws in fixed relation.
In testimony whereof I effix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
