WILLIAM M. TAYLOR, OF WESTON, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF TO WALTER HOLLE, OF SANTA CLARA, WEST VIRGINIA.
DOOR-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 21, 1906.
Application fil d February 15,1906- Serial No. 301,260.
- To all when it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Weston, in the county of Lewis and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Door-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door-holders, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device of this character by means of which the door may be securely locked in closed or partially-closed position:
A further object of the invention is to generally improve this class of devices so as to ado to their utility and durability, as well as to reduce thecost of manufacture.
With these and other .objects in view the invention consists in the construction and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a per spective view of a door-holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the holder detached. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the sliding arm or lever and the clamping mem bers detached. Fig. 4 is a side elevation illustrating a modified form of the invention. Similar numerals of reference indicate cor responding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved holder consists of a rela: tively stationary member 5, provided with a longitudinally-disposed slot or opening 6 and having its opposite ends inclined or beveled and secured to the door 7 by screws or similar fastening devices 8.
Pivotally mounted for swinging movement on an angularly-disposed hook 9, secured to the door-casing 10, is one end of an arm or lever 11, the opposite end of .which engages the upper surface of the member 5 and is provided with oppositely-disposed cam-lugs 12. 5c The arm 11 is mounted for sliding movement on the member 5 and is secured thereto by a bolt 13, which passes through the slot or opening 6 and is provided With a locking-lever 14, adapted to engage the cam-lugs 12.
The bolt 13 has a slight vertical movement within the aperture 15 of the arm 11, so that when the locking-lever is moved into engagement with the lugs 12 the head 16 of the bolt will bear against the lower face of the memher 5 and thereby prevent accidental movement of said arm. fact that the lever 14 is provided with a central enlargement 14, the lower face of which is inclined or beveled to correspond to the inclination of the lugs 12, thereby to assist in clamping the several parts together. The arm 1]. is so proportioned that when the door is closed the pivotal connection 9 and the bolt 13 will be disposed in horizontal alinement, and when said door is open or partially open the arm, together with bolt, will slide longitudinally on the member 5 to permit the opening movement of said door.
' In order to assist in looking the door in closed or partially-closed position, there is provided an auxiliary locking member, preferably in the form of a hook 17, one end of which is pivoted at '18 to the curved end 19 of the arm 11, while the free end thereof is adapted to engage any one of a series of openings 20 formed in the stationary member 5, as shown.
In operation. the door is swung to open'or partially-closed position and the lever 14 rotated until the handle thereof is disposed in the same plane as the stationary member 5, thereby locking the door in adjusted position. To release the door, the lever 14 is rotated to a position at right angles to the member 5 and in which position the door is free to swing laterally upon its hinges. When it is desired to lock-the door in closed position for the night, the lever is first adjusted to engage the lugs 12, after which the bill of the hook 17 is inserted in the adjacent opening 20.
In Fig. 4 there is illustrated a modified form of the-invention, in which one end of the arm or lever 11 is pivoted to a bracket 21, designed for attachment to the door-frame, while the opposite end thereof is pivotally connected to a slide 22, mounted for longitudinal movement on the stationary member 5. In this case the slide 22 is provided with a central 0 ening 23, adapted to register with any one o' a series of openings in the'mem her 5 to permit the insertion of a lockingpin 24.
The improved holder may be formed of Attention is called to the- IOOv wood, metal, or other suitable material and japanned, or otherwise ornamented or protected.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. The combination with a door and casing, of a stationary member secured to the door, an arm pivoted to the casing and slidably mounted on the stationary member, and main and auxiliary locking devices for securing the arm in adjusted position.
2. The combination with a door and casing, of a-stationary member secured to the door and provided with a longitudinally-dis posed slot, an arm pivoted to the casing and slidably mounted on the stationary member,
said arm being provided with cam-lugs, a bolt passing through the slot and adjacent end of the arm, and a cam carried by the bolt and adapted to engage the lugs for locking the arm in adjusted position.
3. The combination with a door and casing, of a stationary member secured to the door and provided with a plurality of openin s, an arm pivoted to the casing and slidab%y engaging the stationary member, a lever for locking the arm in adjusted position, and a hook carried by the arm and adapted to engage the walls of said openings.
4. The combination with a door and a casing, of. a stationary member secured to the I 5. The combination with a relatively fixed and movable member, of a-slotted bar secured to one of said members, an arm pivoted to the opposite member and slidably engaging the bar, said arm being provided with cam-lugs, a bolt passing through the slot in the bar and engaging the arm, a cam carried by the bolt and adapted to engage the lugs for locking the arm in adjusted position and an auxiliary locking device carried by one of the said members and adapted to engage the adjacent member.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM M. TAYLOR.
