siding at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in- Hlnges, of which the following 1s a speciiica- -and inexpensive construction provided with means for instituting an effective frictional engagement between'the members thereof to hold' the mirror or other frame supported thereby irmly and securely at any desired angle.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, inwhich- Figure 1 is a pers ective view showing the application of the inge to one of the side pleces of the frame of a mirror, transom, or the like and the cooperating jamb of the supporting-frame. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the same with the parts in the position they appear when the mirror is swung to a vertical position or in alinement with the side pieces of its supporting-frame.
The hinge comprises two parts or members 1 and 2, each member' consisting of a body ortion 3, having a right-angularly-extendmg attaching-flange 4, said ilange being perforated for the passage of screws or analogous astenings 5 to attach it to the part to which it is to be applied. In the present instance I have shown the member 1 fastened to the jamb yor side piece 6 of a supporting-trame7 and the member 2 fastened to the side piece.

A .bowed spring 11 is disposed within the chamber 9 and bears centrally upon onefof the dished portions and terminally upon the other dished portion and institutes a yielding frietional connection or engagement between the two members of the hinge to normally hold them in iixed relation. It will thus be seen that the spring will be concealed and protected lrom injury and will ermit the mirror or other swinging part to lie swung to any desired angle with reference to its supporting-frame and will hold it firmly and securely in the position to which it is adjusted.

The dished portions 8 are, as shown, of less diameter than the length or width of the body portions 3, and consequently such portions 3 are formed all around the dished portions with flat abutting faces 12 lying in contact with each other. By this construction the supporting strain u on the dished por-' tions is greatly diminis ied over a construction in which the edges of the dished portions are turned inward and have edg'eWise contact, and the sections of the hinge have a broad bearing contact and mutually brace and reinforce each other. As a result I am enabled to make the hinge of sheet metal in ore employed. V.
