Description

N0.829,o7o. l PATENTED AUG.21,1906.
E.- E. HANSEN.
HINGE.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 30, 190B.
WITNESS/E5 I VVE/V701? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL E. HANSEN, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- THIRD TO N. ALBERT MILLER, OF CORNING, NEW YORK.
HINGE.
To aZZ t may concern.v
Be it known that I, EMILE. HANSEN, a
lcitizen of thev United States of America, re-
siding at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in- Hlnges, of which the following 1s a speciiica- -and inexpensive construction provided with means for instituting an effective frictional engagement between'the members thereof to hold' the mirror or other frame supported thereby irmly and securely at any desired angle.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, inwhich- Figure 1 is a pers ective view showing the application of the inge to one of the side pleces of the frame of a mirror, transom, or the like and the cooperating jamb of the supporting-frame. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the same with the parts in the position they appear when the mirror is swung to a vertical position or in alinement with the side pieces of its supporting-frame.
The hinge comprises two parts or members 1 and 2, each member' consisting of a body ortion 3, having a right-angularly-extendmg attaching-flange 4, said ilange being perforated for the passage of screws or analogous astenings 5 to attach it to the part to which it is to be applied. In the present instance I have shown the member 1 fastened to the jamb yor side piece 6 of a supporting-trame7 and the member 2 fastened to the side piece.
7 of a mirror or transom frame7 which is similarly mounted at both sides upon the supporting-frame to swing at an angle thereto.
The body portions 3 of the two hinge mem-v bers are provided With complemental dished portions 8 and have their meeting faces disposed in contactual relation with the dished portions arranged opposite each other to Patented Aug. 21, 1906.
form an inelosed space or chamber 9, the two members being hinged or pivotally united by means of a rivet or other suitable pivot connection 10, axially connecting the dished portions, thus permitting the member 2 on 'thc'niovable part to swing upon the member 1 on the fixed part. A .bowed spring 11 is disposed within the chamber 9 and bears centrally upon onefof the dished portions and terminally upon the other dished portion and institutes a yielding frietional connection or engagement between the two members of the hinge to normally hold them in iixed relation. It will thus be seen that the spring will be concealed and protected lrom injury and will ermit the mirror or other swinging part to lie swung to any desired angle with reference to its supporting-frame and will hold it firmly and securely in the position to which it is adjusted.
. The dished portions 8 are, as shown, of less diameter than the length or width of the body portions 3, and consequently such portions 3 are formed all around the dished portions with flat abutting faces 12 lying in contact with each other. By this construction the supporting strain u on the dished por-' tions is greatly diminis ied over a construction in which the edges of the dished portions are turned inward and have edg'eWise contact, and the sections of the hinge have a broad bearing contact and mutually brace and reinforce each other. As a result I am enabled to make the hinge of sheet metal in ore employed. V.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- As a new and improved article of manufacture, a hinge comprising two members stamped from sheet metal, each having a body ortion and an attaching-flange arrange at right angles to each other, the body portion of each member being dished and provided around the dished ortion with a ilat marginal bearing-face, t 1e dished portions ofthe members being arranged to form an intervening chamber and having their lace of the more expensive castingsheretobearing against the dished portion of the taetwith each other, a pivot-pin passing aXiother member. 1o ally through the dished ortions, and a In testimony whereof I afixmy signature bowed spring-stri centra y engaged and in presence of two Witnesses.
5 held by the pin, t e central portion of said EMIL E. HANSEN. strip having its convex face arranged to bear upon the dished portion of one member, and having the free ends or terminals thereof marginal bearing-faces iiatly in eon- Witnesses: JOHN A. NELSON,
JULIUS GRENNEROD.
