WEANlNG-IVIUZZLE.
Specification of Letters atent.
Patented Aug'. 21, 1906.
Application filed March 2. 1906. Serial No. 303.841.
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWIN I. SEwARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chico, in the county of Colfax and Territory of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weaning-Muzzles, of g l longitudinal groove in a nose-finger 19, 1n-
which the following is a specification, refer ence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to weaning-muzzles adapted to fit on the noses of calves, one of the objects being to provide a device of the character described that shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, eflicient in operation, and adapted to be readily and quickly applied or removed from the nose of :a calf or other animal.
A further object is to provide a weaningmuzzle that can be readily adjusted to fit the nose and securely held in such adjusted position without causing pain, inconvenience in feeding, or any injurious effects.
The construction and operation of the invention by which the objects above enumerated are accomplished will be obvious from the drawings accompanying this specification and made a part thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the nose of a calf, showing my device in operative position thereon. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on lines 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on lines 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Like reference-numerals designate corresponding parts on the drawings and in the specification.
1 designates an outer plate, preferably, although not necessarily, comprised of zinc, heavy tin, or some like material, having parts cut-away to form an upwardly-projecting portion 2, bent on itself to form a sleeve 3, and having its end bent at an angle to form an upwardly-projecting flange 4, resting in a groove 5 in a nose-linger 6, inserted in the sleeve 3, the object of the plate 4 being to prevent the finger 6 from turning in the sleeve. The nose-linger is provided with an enlarged end 7 to form a n annular shoulder 8, abutting against the inner end of the sleeve to hold the enlarged end in one nostril of the animal, as shown in Fig. 1. The plate 1 is also provided with an opening 9, through which extends a set-screw 10, having a nut 11 thereon and having its end tapered to form a sharp point 12, and with an oblong slot 13, in which travels another set-screw 14, passing through an opening 15 in corresponding inner plate 16, having parts cut away to form an upwardly-projecting portion 17bent on itself to form a sleeve 18, and having its end bent at an angle to form an upwardly-projecting plate similar to plate 4, resting in a serted in the sleeve 18. One end of the nosefinger 19 is enlarged., as at 20, to form an annular shoulder 21, abutting against the inner end of the sleeve to hold the enlarged end in the other nostril. The screw 14 is also provided with a nut 22 and an outer sharp-pointed end 23. This plate 16 has also an oblong slot 24, in which the set-screw 10 is adapted to travel in adjusting the two plates, so that the nose-fingers will nt the nostrils of the calf. The lower end of the outer plate 1 is also provided with a reinforcing or stiening rim 25, preferably formed by. rolling the lower edge of said plate upon itself.
In operation the set-screws 1() and 14 are loosened, so that the heads thereof and the nuts are freed from frictional contact with the plates 1 and 16. The plates then slide on each other, the set-screws traveling in the slots 13 and 24, and the space between the lingers 6 and 19 can be thus lengthened or shortened according to the width of the nose of the animal. When the muzzle is placed on the nose, the set-screws are tightened, and the heads thereon engage the inner plate. The nuts are thus brought into frictional contact with the outer plate and the two plates thus held securely in pla'ce.
It is thought that the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, renders the construction and operation of the device sufliciently clear and that further explanation is not needed.
Having thus .described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A weaning-muzzle comprising plates slidably and adjustably connected with each other, each plate having a sleeve formed integral therewith and a flange extending longitudinally of the sleeve, and nose-fingers having longitudinal grooves therein whereby they are slidably mounted on the flanges within the sleeves.
2. A weaning-muzzle comprising plates provided with oblong openings or slots and having sleeves formed integral therewith, the edges of said plates Abeing bent to form flanges extending longitudinally of the sleeves IOO IIO
and within the same, nose-fingers mounted in the sleeves and having longitudinal grooves whereby they are slidably mounted on the flanges and thereby held against rotation, and pointed set-screws passing through oblong openings or slots in the plates and affording means whereby the plates are slidably connected and held in adjusted position.
3. A weaning-muzzle comprising plates slidably connected with each other and provided with oblong openings or slots, said plates having sleeves formed integral therewith and flanges extending longitudinally thereof, a nose-finger mounted in each sleeve and having a longitudinal groove therein vwhereby it is slidably mounted on the flange anl thereby held against rotation, and setscrews having their outer ends pointed, said screws passing through the oblong openings `or slots in the plates and affording means .whereby they are adjustably connected and held in adjusted position.
4. A weaning-muzzle comprising plates flanges and thereby held against rotation, set- Y screws having their outer ends pointed and i passing through the oblong openings or slots in the plates whereby the plates are connected and held in adjusted position, and a rei'nforcing or stiffening rim formed integral with the lower edge of on'e of said plates.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afhx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
