UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

IMPROVEMENT IN 'CURRY-COMBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,410, dated April 16, 1878 application filed September 26, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MOOERS COLE, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Curry-Combs, of which the following is a specification:
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the brush and comb, the latter having a single comb-blade. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing several blades.
Arepresents the brush; B, the comb-blade, andO the handle. D is a spindle, to which the comb-blades are attached. One end of this spindle is provided with a screw-thread, while the other end is provided with the oppositely-projecting arms a a.
The comb-blade B is made of thin sheetsteel or similar spring material. One or more of these blades may be employed, as desired, each one being separate from and independent of the others.
Each blade has one longitudinal edge toothed, in the usual manner, and also one end edge. This latter edge is slightly curved, and, as it is free to spring and yield in either longitudinal direction, is of great advantage in currying around the legs and head of the animal. The opposite longitudinal and end edges serve as sweat-scrapers, the latter edge being also curved, for the purpose of scraping more efl'ectively around the head and. legs.
The spindle D is inserted through a hole in the center of the combblade B, and the handle O screwed to the screw-threaded end, thus blades sufficiently firm, While allowing of a slight yielding on the axis or spindle D also. The operation. of currying is therefore performed with much less annoyance and irritation to the animal, and with much less trouble to the groom, than when the comb has the usual rigid blades.
The arms a a of the spindle D also serve to hold the brush A to the comb, each extremity of the arms being provided witha screw-hole, so that the brush may be readily screwed to or unscrewed from the comb. The combblades are also easily detached from the spindle by unscrewing the handle 0.
I claim as new and of my invention 1.. The combination of the handle 0 with the single yielding comb-blades B and spindle D, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the separate and removable brush A with the comb by means of the spindle D, substantially as described.
MOOERS COLE.
