Description
PATENTED AUG. 21, 1906. W. H. LOGAN. SPIRAL SLIDEWAY.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 1 0, 1905.
WVILLIAM HUME LOGAN, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
SPIRAL SLIDEWAY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 21, 1906.
Application filed January 10,1905. Serial No. ZLOAYQ.
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HUME Lo- GAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spiral Slideways; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to fire-escapes or spiral slideways, and has for its object to provide a device of this class which is simple and easy to construct and at the same time strong, durable, and eflicient.
' In that class of fire-escapes embodying a spiral chute or slideway and a central standpipe or support probably the most difficult point in their construction is the securing the leaves or sections of which the slideway is made up to the central standpipe. constructions have been tried. The leaves or sections have been provided with collars integral with the leaves or sections, and numerous other constructions have been employed to more or less advantage. However, this part of the slideway has always-been difficult to construct, and consequently expen sive.
It is for the purpose of providing a simple and easy construction for securing the leaves or sections of the slideway to the central support that I have made my present invention; and with this object in view my invention consists in riveting or boltin the leaves or sections of the slideway directly to the stand pipe or support after first bending the inner edges of the leaves or sections a short distance around the stand-pipe.
Referring to the accompanyin drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the outer casing broken away and a portion of a leaf of the slideway secured to the stand-pipe. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the stand-pipe and leaf. Fig. 3 is a Various similar view showing leaf bolted to the standpipe, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view showing the stand-pipe and inner portion of the leaf. 7
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures, in v which 1 indicates the outer cylindrical casing; 2, the central stand-pipe or support 3, a leaf or section of the chute or slideway, and 4 indicates the screws or bolts securing the leaves or sections to the stand-pipe.
In order to secure the leaves or sections 3 to the stand-pipe 2, the said leaves or sections are bent at 5, near the inner edges thereof, at an angle to the body of the slideway to form a flange 6, said flange 6 being curved to conform to the stand-pipe. The leaf or section is then bent or twisted spirally, the flange 6 following the stand-pipe, and is screwed or bolted thereto by screws or rivets 4, as shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction as herein set forth, as various slight changes may be made therein which would fall within the limit and scope of my invention, and I consider myself clearly entitled to all such changes and modifications.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
In a device of the character described, the combination with a central support, of a spiral slideway the portion adjacent its inner edge bent at an angle to the body of the slideway to form a flange to conform to the said central support, and to engage only a portion of the surface of said central support, and means for fastening the slideway to the said central support, said fastening means entering the said central support, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I QIHlX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HUME LOGAN.
