1 HEADER FOR WATER-PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 736,934, dated August 25, 1903.

To all whom it may concern.-
' and State of Nebraska, have invented certain useful Improvements in Headers for VVater- Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and novel improvement in headers for water-pipes.
The aim of my invention is to provide a mechanism by means of which the end of an ordinary water-pipe may be provided with a cap which will insure a water-tight sealand at the same time be so constructed that the cap may be almost instantly removed.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in Figure 1 a sectional view disclosing the broken end of a water-pipe provided with one of my headers. Fig. 2 shows a bottom, view of my header, while Fig. 3 discloses an elevation disclosing the end of an ordinary water pipe as provided with one of my headers.
As ordinarily constructed one water-pipe is fitted into. another by means of aleaden collar, which is cast between the end of one pipe and the neck of the connected pipe-section. Heretofore in closing the ends of an ordinary water-pipe a plug has been fitted into the end of the water-pipe, and the plug has then been provided with a collar of lead cast into the same to hold and unite the same in the same manner as the various pipe-sections are usually connected. 'When these plugs are to' be removed, the plug has got to be chipped or cut out, which not only destroys the pipe, but is a time-consuming task.
In my invention I provide a device which can be almost instantly removed without in any Way marring the pipe.
In carrying out the aim of my invention I provide a cap 13, which I provide centrally with an ordinarily-extending hub C, the cap being provided with the extending flange 0, adapted to work over the end I) of the female end of an ordinary water-pipe A, as shown. gear-sectors 3, the gears 4: of which-meet with a suitable worm E, secured to a shaft 5, passing through the hub or boss 0 and provided above, as is shown at 6, and secured by means of a suitable nut 7, the end 6 being square, so as to permit the ready attachment of a wrench. Below a washer 8 secures the worm E. with outwardly-extending ears 1, which are adapted to work into the groove a within the female end of each water-pipe A, as shown.
In securing my cap I employ two half-collars F, which are united by means of the bolts 15, and from these half -collars extend the holders G, secured by means of the bolts 9 and having their lower ends 1() bent below the collars F, as is shown in Fig. 1. Above these holders G are hooked through the eyelets 12, the stems 13 of which work within the flange of the cap 13, as disclosed. After the collar F has been securely fastened below the neck of the female end of the water-pipe to secure the cap B the shaft 5 is rotated to actuate the worm E in such a manner that the ears 1 are forced outward and within the groove aof the pipe, so that the cap B is securely. fastened to the water-pipe, a suitable packing-ring 14. being interposed, as shown.
As the cap B and the connected parts are made of suitable non-corroding material, the water within the pipe A will in no way rust the .working instrunientalities. These caps and their connections are made of various sizes to fit the different-sized pipes.
Having thus described my said invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is
A header for water-pipes, comprising a split collar, holders extending from said collar, a cap provided with suitable supporting-ears, and a central perforation, aforesaid holders being movably secured to said cap, a shaft extending centrally through said cap, a wormgear secured to said shaft, and a plurality of geared sectors pivotally secured to said ears, each sector being provided with an outwardlyeXtending lug, said instrumentalities being arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
