G. W. TAYLOR EAVES TROUGH.
(No Model.)
No. 857,876. Patented Feb. 15,1887.

llhvirnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. TAYLOR, OF CASTILE, NEIV YORK.
EAVES-TRCUGH.
SPECIFICATIQBI forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,876, dated February 15, 1887.
Application filed Kovemhcr J, 1886. Serial No. 217,791. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE IV. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Gastile, in the county of XVyoming and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eaves- Troughs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in eaves-troughs and means for attaching the same; and it consists in the detailed construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l-is a view in perspective of my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views thereof, and Fig. 4 is a view of a modification.
In carrying out my invention I employ a trough, A, composed of sections a a, joined together by means of a similar-shaped semicircular sleeve or collar, b rigidly secured to the under side of one section near the end thereof and projecting out beyond said end a short distance. By placing a section, 0, within said projecting portion of the sleeve or collar 1), so as to cause the end thereof to abut against the edge of the adjoining section a, said sections will be firmly held together by means of a nutted belt, I), passed through a correspondingly-shaped aperture in the end of section a and the sleeve or collar. These sections, which, when thus joined, form the trough A, have an outwardly projecting flange, a", formed on the upper outer edge of each side thereof, the purpose of which will now appear.
B is a curved hanger, the upper flattened portion of which is provided with two or more apertures for securing the same to the roof of the building to which my invention is designed to be attached. The lower end of the vertical portion of this hanger is provided with a screw-thread, C, and said end is designed to be passed through a central aperture formed in a cross bar or plate, D. Before being passed through the apertu're in said bar or plate, a nut, 0, is screwed on the threaded portion of said hanger, and the same, in connection with a similar nut, 0 serves to securely retain said hanger in position with the cross bar or plate, said nut 0 being passed on said hanger after the end thereof is inserted through the apertured bar or plate against which said nut is designed to'prcss.
The cross bar or plate D is provided on either end with inwardly-projecting clutching-arms (Z d, so arranged as to permit of the sliding or adjustment thereof on the trough A, said arms fitting over and under the flanges a formed on said trough. From this it will be seen that before attaching or joining the sections, as above explained, the cross bar or plate D can be placed on the trough by sliding its arms on the flanges, as stated; and by passing the end of the hanger through the aperture in said bar or plate the same will be so curely held thereto by the nuts on said hanger, as before explained.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a modified form of my hanger, which consisls in providing a screw-thread, c, on the end of the horizontal portion of a hanger, E, which screwthreaded portion can be inserted directlyinto the eaves or roof of the house. This form of hanger can be used to like advantage as that above described.
I am aware that it is not new to provide eavestroughs with projecting flanged portions for uniting the sections; but by employing a nutted screw or bolt, as shown in my invention, the quickest and best means of securing the project-ing sleeves or collars to the sections is obtained, and this at but slight expense.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the hangers and the cross bar or plate, of the trough composed of sections, the apertured sleeves or collars, and the nutted bolts, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the troughs composed of sections, the apcrturcd sleeves or 001- lars uniting said sections by nutted bolts, and the cross bar or plate having clutchingarms and suspended by hangers, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. TAYLOR.
