Be it known that I, WENDELIN P. SENG, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Handles for Box Couches, Davenports, &c., of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in handles for use in connection with boxcouches, davenport-lounges, &c.

I-Ieretofore in the construction of boxcouches, davenportlounges, and other articles of furniture embodying a movable upholstered top it has'been usual to provide the top with a loop or strap of the material employed .as a covering and to secure the same in position against the under side and at the front edge of the top, so as to leave said loop or strap projecting outward to be grasped by the operator in raising and lowering the top, as well as in some instances in drawing the same forward during such raising operation. This loop or strap being formed of fabric, it has been customary to secure the same in position through the medium of a series of tacks driven upwardly through the ends of the .loop or strap and into the under side of the frame of the top. As a result of such construction such loops or straps are almost invariably pulled from their position within av very short time after the article of furniture to which they are applied is put into use.

The objects of this invention are to provide a very simple, efficient, as well as cheaplyconstructed and readily-applied handle to be applied to this class of furniture and as a substitute for the loop or strap now usually employed.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the conventional style of box-couch having a handle applied thereto in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the top or lid of the couch raised and the handle withdrawn as when in use. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the handle in detail, and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the same.

Similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts in all the figures of the drawings.

It will be understood that while the hereinafter-describedhandle is particularly desi ned and adapted for use in connection with OX- couches and davenports or other forms of sofa-beds, yet the same may be used otherwise, the box-couch herein illustrated and to which the invention is shown applied merely being employed as an example.

The handle comprises a sheet-metal and preferably stamped-steel securing-plate 3 of oblong shape and having its ends or terminals concaved or countersunk to form half sleeves or channels 4. Between the ends the front edge of the securing-plate 3 is preferably cut away to form a recess 5, and at suitable points said securing-plate is provided with a plurality of screw-holes 6, by which the plate may be secured in position through the medium of screws 7 passed upwardly through the holes and into the under side of the top orlid adj acent its front edge. The handle or bail Sis formed,'preferably, of wire of proper gage and is of general U shape. It is somewhat wider than the securing-plate 3, and its two parallel terminals 9 lie loosely and are designed to slide within the opposite channels 4 of the securing-plate. The ends of the handle or bail 8 have their terminals laterally bent, as at 10, which bent ends when the handle is withdrawn come in contact with the securing-plate 3, thus forming stops for limiting the outward movement of the handle.

The device described may be applied to the under side of the top or cover of the article of furniture and the edge of the receptacle 1 recessed, as at 11, to accommodate the same when the said cover is lowered, as herein shown, or, as will be obvious, the said top or cover may be recessed to receive the handle. In either event, however, the handle is so located as to be readily grasped and.

withdrawn, for the urpose of facilitating which the recess 5 is ormed in the securingplate, so that the fingers of the operator may readily engage the handle or bail 8. It will be understood that in practice the handle or bail is rendered inconspicuous by enameling .the same of a color agreeing with the upholstering, and, in fact, if desired, the material forming the cover may be extended over and so as to entirely conceal the handle.

In operation the handle or bail is grasped ICC and pulled outward its limit, thus affording 'a firm hold for the operator, and the latter is enabled to manipulate the lid or cover in the usual manner and as will be obvious.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, in an article offurniture, comprising a receptacle and a removable lid or cover, of a handle secured to the under side of the latter and comprising a securing-plate having opposite depressed channels, a bail or handle of substantially U shape having its terminals mounted in said channels and adapted for movement therein, and shaped to form a means for limiting the with drawal of the bail or handle.

2. The combination, in an article of furniture comprising the receptacle portion and a removable cover, of a handle secured to the under side of said lid or-cover and comprising a securing-plate having opposite depressed channels and a rectangular bail mounted to slide in the channels and terminating back of the securing-plate in stops.

3. The herein-described handle comprising the securing-plate formed of sheet metal and having at its ends transverse depressions forming channels, and a wire bail of U shape mounted in the channels and having its terminals of greater length than the channels and its ends laterally bent to form stops adapted to contact with the rear edge of the plate.

4. The herein-described handle, comprising a sheet-metal plate having its transverse ends provided with transverse depressions forming opposite channels, and between the same at its front edge recessed, and a wire bail mounted to slide in the channels and having terminals of greater length than the channels and provided with stops for limiting its outward movement.

5. The combination in an article of furniture comprising a receptacle and a removablelid or cover, the latter recessed at its lower front edge, of'a handle comprising the flat sheet-metal securing-plate 3 secured to the under side of the recess and flush with the front edge of the lid or cover, said plate being provided at its ends with transverse depressions forming channels and between the samehaving its front edge recessed, as at 5, to correspond with the recess in the cover and the wire bail 8 having its terminals 9 mounted in the said channels and longer than the same'and terminating back of the securing-plate in the stops 10 adapted to en- WENDELIN P.
