Be it known that I, ALFRED RoLLMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oflice-Desks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in office-desks.

The object of my invention is to provide means for conveniently attaching a draftingboard to an ordinary office-desk in sucha position that it will not interfere with the ordinary uses of the desk and which may be adjusted to position of use and used without requiring the removal of articles on the top of the desk.

In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of a desk embodying my invention with the outer end wall removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the slide extended and the drafting-board in osition of use. Fig. 3 is a detail view, in

orizontal section, of the board-receiving pocket with slide and board therein. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the pocket drawn transversely of the slide. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the means for holding the T-square. Fig. 6 is a front elevation showing the pocket for the slide and board located at the inner side of one tier of drawers. Fig. 7 is a plan view with the board in position for use. Fig. 8 is a front elevation of the desk shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 9 is a front elevation showing a modified form of construction.

Like parts are identified by the same reference characters throughout the several views.

Referring to Fig. 1 it will be observed that a pocket is formed at the end of the desk by providing two end walls 1 and 2 instead of the single wall used in ordinary desks. A slide 3 is arranged to move in suitable guides 4, located under the top 5 of the desk, and of which guides the straps 6 form a part. The slide 3 carries the drafting-board 7, one edge of which is preferably located in a recess 8 and connected with the slide by hinges 9, so that when drawn out the board may be swung to a horizontal position. When so swung, it is supported near the other edge by an auxiliary slide 11, which is drawn out from underneath the central portion of the top board for that purpose. The pocket is closed (when the slide 3 and board are pushed inwardly) by a door 12, hinged to the outer wall 2 of the desk. The drafting-board is provided with guides 14 for a T-square 15, which hangs vertically when the board is swung downwardly and is held in position by a spring 16 on one of the guides. The T-- square passes through a recess at 17 in the side and upper surface of the slide 3, the recess being so formed that the board may be swun without removing the square.

Re erring to Fig. 6, it will be seen that my invention also may be applied to a desk at the inner side of one of the tiers of drawers, a

.pocket for the board and slide being formed in the desk similar to that between the walls 1 and 2 and closed by a door 20.

Referring to Fig.8, it will be observed that the board may, if desired, be centrally located and permanently secured to two slides 21- and 22, each of which moves in a suitable guideway adjacent to one of the tiers of drawers. In this case the slides are merely drawn out when it is desired to use the board. A drawer 25 is preferably located on the under surface of the board for the reception of draftin -tools. This drawer may be employed 1n any of the described constructions where the pockets are of sufficient width to receive it.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is a 1. In a desk provided with a fixed top or writing-table and having an open space underneath the central ortion of the top, the combination of a sh e mounted in suitable guideways below the top and at one side of said open s ace; a drafting-board connected with said s ide and an auxiliary slide adapted to cooperate with the first-mentioned slide in supporting the board in front of the fixed top, together with suitable guides located on the underside of the drafting-board; a T- square adapted to be engaged by said guides; and a resilient clamping device adapted to hold the T-square normally in position, said clamping device being arranged for a sliding bearing on the surface of the T-square and adapted to permit the latter to be moved into and out of position in opposition to the pressure of the clamping device.

2. In a desk, a slide mounted in suitable guideways, and adapted to move outwardly to the front of the desk; a drafting-board connected with said slide; and an auxiliary slide adapted to cooperate with the firstmentioned slide in supporting said board,

said board being hinged to one of the slides.

3. In a desk, the combination of a slide; a drafting-board connected with the slide; an auxiliary slide for supporting the board in front of the desk-top; suitable guides located on the under side of the drafting-board; a T- square adapted to be engaged by said guides, said board being hinged to one of the slides and arranged to swing downwardly in a re cess thereof, and said slide being also recessed for the reception of the T-square.

4. In a desk, a slide mounted in suitable guideways and adapted to move outwardly to the front of the desk; a drafting-board connected with said slide; an auxiliary slide adapted to cooperate with the firstanentioned slide in supporting said board; one of said slides being recessed to receive the board on one side, and the board being hinged to said slide and arranged to hang in said recess when not in use; and said desk being provided with parallel walls adapted to form a pocket for the reception of the slide and board.

5. In a desk, a slide mounted in suitable guideways and adapted to move outwardly to the front of the desk; a draftingboard connected with said slide; an auxiliary slide adapted to cooperate with the first-1nentioned slide in supporting said board, said drafting-board being connected to the firstmentioned slide and arranged to hang suspended therefrom when unsupported by the auxiliary slide; and said desk being provided with a pocket adapted to receive the slide and suspended board; together with a door adapted to close said pocket.
