TO ALL WIHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. GooDENoUGH, of Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey,
have invented a new and improved Saw-Set; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, forming a part of this specifica/tion, in ,which- Figure 1 represents a. longitudinal vertical section view of a saw-set constructed according to my improve-A ment, with the upper side of the handle or stock removed.
Figure 2 represents a top, and Y Figure 3 represents a transverse section, taken through the line :n x, illustrating the mode of applying it to the saw.

The object ofl this inventionis to provide for setting the teeth of saws to an absolute uniformity, with greater facility than is afforded by the saw-sets in common use, and without drawing or attening the tooth.
The invention consists in a novel arrangement of the several parts of a saw-set, whereby the pulling of a trigger-like lever elevates and releases a pivoted hammer, which, by means of a spring-attachment, descends upon said releasement, thereby striking the tooth of the saw, whilethe blade thereof serves as a guide to the set.
In order that others may be better enabled to understand the construction and/operation of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A is the stock or body of the saw-set, of a formation much resembling that of a pistol-stock. B is a pivoted arm or hammer, which is operated by means of a mainspring, b, after a manner substantially the same s the hammer of a pistol, and which is provided with cogged'sector upon its lower part, partially surrounding the pivotf. C is a forked lever or trigger, with its lpivot cZ in front of the pivotf of the hammer B. This lever or trigger C has upon its lower extremity a ring for insertion of the finger, and which projects from the under side of the stock for that purpose, and ismade double, or bipronged, along its-central and upper portion,'
for the purpose of receiving between said prongs a cogged sector, D, which has its pivot in common with vthe pivot d of the trigger C, but has a separate and indepeiident motion from the same. This cogged sector D engages, by means of its cogs, with the cogs of the sector E, upon the lower part of the hammer B, and has secured to it at its upper extremity a curved spring, c, which is provided with a hook or notch, z', and a projection, lz, extending beyond the said notch z', for a purpose hereinafter explained. The upper extremities of the prongs of vthe fork of the trigger C are made to project a little above the pivot d, and turn forwards by an abrupt turn to the left, as shown at 1. The extreme upper pointsof these prongs are connected together by a stud or pin, a, so that when the trigger C is drawn backwards, thereby throwing the upper ends of the forks forward, this pin or -stud a locks into the notch z' on the under side of the curved spring c, carrying forward.` the sector D, thereby raising the hammer B. e is a stud or boltrpassing transversely through curved slots o in the stock A, in a horizontal direction. 1lhis stud is situated `in front of the pivotal, and immediately below the projection L of the spring c, and is susceptible of a nearly vertical adjustment in the slots o, and therein secured by a nut, g, on one end, and ahead upon the other, so that when the lever or trigger C is drawn back, carrying the sector D forward by lock of the stud or pin a with the notch z' of the spring c, and thereby raises the hammer B, the projection t is brought in contact with the stud e, whereupon, a continued pull upon the trigger C carries t'hespring forward, and forces theprojoction t against the stud e with sufficient force to cause the spring c to yield, and the pin a to become ldisengaged from the notch on the said spring. The hammer B being thereby released, is carried downward by means of the main spring Zz, inflicting a blow upon the tooth ofthe saw with adegree of force proportionate to` the vdegree of elevation to which the hammer is raised, which is regulated by adiustment of the stud or bolt e in the' slots o, nearer to or further from the projection h. On releasing the trigger C, it is caused to resume its former position by means of a spiral spring, c, one
extremity of which is attached to the said trigger, the other to a part of 'the stock A, in front of' the said trigger C.
m is a guide, secured to and firmly between the extremities of the arms A of the stock A, and situated in a perpendicularrelation to the plane of motion, and against which the sides of' the saw-teeth are kept when the saw is boing set, and which receives the recoil of the hammer when the tooth is struck, thereby preventing the tooth from being broken bfi' or set too far. n n are'friction guide-rollers, carried upon an adjustable frame, 72, which is susceptible f elevation and depression, by means of a vertical slot in its centro, and between the guide-rollers n n, and through this slot passes the set-screw S, which serves to secure the said frame to the guide-bar m.
'The guide-rollers n n serve as guides to the upper edge of the teeth, and regulate the upward motion of s the saw.
The aforesaid adjustment of the said rollers is provided for the purpose of setting saws having larger or smaller-sized teeth, and which may be raised or lowered for said purpose, and when suitably adjusted to the teeth, may be secured at said adjustment by means of the set-screw S, tightened upon the frame p.
- W is a lower guide-roller, carried upon the' outer end ci' an adjustablel arm, y, which projects from the` stock under the hammer, and parallel with the same, and which serves to guide thejblade of the saw and regulate the amount of set given to the teeth, its adjustability for that purpose being elected by means of a longitudinal slot through the arm y, through which ts a headed bolt. The adjustment of said roller, when made, is secured by a set-screw, V, upon the outer extremity of said bolt.
Z is a set-screw, in the lower part of the handle or stock, for the purpose of tightening and strengthening the main spring When this saw-set is to be used or operated, the saw requiring tobe set is secured in a vise, or otherwise suitably confined, withits teeth upward, and the saw-set so grasped in the hand that the index or fore-finger may be passed throughthering of the trigger C'. l A. partial contraction of the finger upon said trigger will slightly elevate the hammer, so that the face thereof will clear the face of the guide m, whereupon the device may be placed upon the edge of the saw, so that the inner side or guiding face of the bar m rests against t'he opposite side of the teeth, the guide-rollers n n vresting upon Vthe upper edge oir the saw, and between the points of the teeth, and the guide-roller W resting against the near `side of the saw-blade, or Athe side opposite that operated upon by the guide m.
When in this position, and adjusted upon the rst tooth to be set, the trigger C is pulled rbackwards far enough, not only to elevate, butto release the hammer B, which descends upon the tooth, driving it against the face of the guide m, thereby giving said tooth a degree of' `set proportionate to the adjustment of the device,
`after which the hammer is again withdrawn by the same means already described,'and the device adjusted uponA the tooth'next to be set, and the hammer caused to rise and descend as before, and so on, until the operation is completed,

What I claim as my invention, and desireto have secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. The `combination of the guide-bar m and adjustable frame p, carrying the guide-'rollers n n, with the stock A, hammer B, and adjustable guide-roller W, all arranged and operating substantially as shown and described. t f
2. The spring c having a projection, 71., and notch z', attached to the sector D, in combination with the stud a on the trigger; and adjustable stud e, for operation together, substantially as set forth.
