TOALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. H. NYE, of Ascushnet, in the county of Bristol, and State-'of Massachusetts, have made anew and useful invention having reference to Cross-Bows; and I do hereby cleclare'the same to be fully described in the following specifica-tion and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top view; and
Figure 2, a longitudinal section of a 'cross-bow, 'provided with my invention.
The nature of such invention consists in the combination of a cross-bow and arrow magazine, and a `mecham` ism for setting and discharging the string of the bow.
In the drawings, A denotes Vthe stock, and B the spring ofthe c-ross-bowga being the cord or string of such spring. A magazine, G, for-holding a series of arrows-to be larranged, within it, as shown at I) b b, indig. 2, is placed on the upper surface ofthe stock A, and is connected. with such stock by being hinged to the outer end of a rod, c, which slides in the-stock lengthwise, andis arranged therein in manner as shown in iig. 2. 0in or about on a-.level with the bottom of the 1nagazine,.a long slot, d, -goes through the -magazine laterally, land has a notch, e', extending down from it at its rc'ar end. The cord d of the spring B .goes through the said slot. There is applied to the magazine, and so as to extend underneath the notch e, a movable block or cord-trippa', f, which projects below the magazinea'depth equal to,'or about equal to, the' depth of the notch el The tripper should be capable of being moved vertically inthe magazine. A bent. lever, D, arranged with the magazine and the stock as represented, has'its fulcrum at g, such being a pin going through the stock.v .The magazine is connected with the lever a pin, h, going through .the two. Leading out of the magazine, and on a level with theupper surface ofits bottom, is a passage, z', 'for the exit of an arrow while being driven out of the magazine. O-n laying hold of the lever and moving it forward into the position shown in blue lines in g. 2, the magazine -will be so advanced as to cause the cord a at its Ymiddle totake. or catch into the notch Ve. By pulling the lever backward the magazine will -be retracted and will'draw on the corda and contract or bend the spring.' By. continuing to pull the lever back, the magazine'may be forced down upon the stock so as to cause the tripperf to be pressed down upon the stock and force thccord out ofthe notch. The. cord on being set free will act against the rear end of the lowermost arrow, and expel such arrow from the magazine. Thus the arrows in succession may be discharged'from the magazine. I
I claim as my invention the combination ofthe cross-bow, the arrow magazine, and a mechanism for setting and discharging the cord of the spring of the'bow, the whole being substantially as hereiubefore described. E. o. H. NYE.
