Description

UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. '7, 1906.
Application filed September 19, 1905. Serial No. 279,175-
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. ARBOUR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches.
The. primary object contemplated in my improved construction is the provision ofa simple and inexpensive adjusting element, which shall be capable of setting the wrench with its jaws apart any desired distance, the degree of adjustment being very fine.
The detailed construction will appear in the course of the following description, in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, like numerals designating like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central section, partly broken away, of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the wrench shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are side and front elevations, respectively, of the adjusting-lever employed in my improved construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a shoe with which the adjusting element shown in Figs. 3 and 4 coacts.
My improved wrench comprises a handle portion 1, which is formed with a longitudinally-disposed central opening 2 and with a longitudinally-disposed slot 3 in the front thereof. The handle portion 1 is provided at its top with an integral jaw 4 and a jaw 5, carried by a movable shank 6, that sets in the opening 2 of the handle portion 1, coacts with the jaw 4 in gri ping an' object. Engagement'of the sha 1 6 with the handle portion 1 is accomplished by means of engaging teeth 10, formed upon the inner surface of the handle adjacent said slot 2, which engage corresponding teeth 11, formed upon the shank 6. These series of teeth 10 and 11 are locked in their intermeshing position by provided with an inclined outer face 17.
When the lever is in position shown in Fig.
2, the reduced portion 14 thereof will bear against the inclined face 17 of the shoe 16 and will allow the teeth 10 and 11 to be out of mesh, so that the shank 6 may be moved in either direction. When the jaws have been set and the locking engagement thereof is desired, the lever 12 is moved to assume the dotted-line position in Fig. 2, at which time the cam-face 13 thereof will ride outwardly upon the inclined face 17 of the shoe 16 and draw therewith the shank 6 until the teeth 11, formed thereon, intermesh with teeth 10 upon the handle, thereby effecting a locking union between said shank and said handle.
Having fully described my invention, I 'claim I A wrench embodying a handle provided with a longitudinal recess extending to one end thereof, and an intermediate longitudinal slot, an integral head formed upon said handle, a shank mounted in said handle, and adapted to have movement in said recess, an integral head formed onsaid shank and confronting said first-named head, said handle being formed adjacent said slot and Within the said recess with a vertical series of teeth, said shank being formed upon the side adj acent said slot with a series of teeth of equal pitch to said first-named teeth, a bolt carried by said shank and projecting through said slot a wedge-shaped block mounted on said bolt and a lever mounted on said bolt outside of said wedge-shaped block for effecting an intermeshing locking engagement between said teeth formed upon said handle and shank, and for forming frictional locking engagement with the outside surface of said handle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. ARBOUR.
