UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STOVE- Specification of Letters Patent.
LIFTER- Patented July 31, 1906.
Application filed December 14:. 1905. Serial No. 291,728.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW A. ZAGST, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and- State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Lifters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 7
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in supports or hangers; and the invention relates more particularly to a novel form of support for stove-lifters, pokers, shovels, and the like hardware articles used in connection with stoves.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of novel means for conveniently holding a stove article whereby easy access may be had to the same at any time, the article being supported in a convenient place adj acent to the stove, at the same time not interfering with the general operation of a stove.
Briefly described, my invention resides in mounting a casing upon a ceiling or wall of a compartment adjacent to a stove mounted within said compartment, and in the casing I provide a spring-held drum upon which is wound a cord, rope, or chain, to the end of which is attached a stove -lifter or the like article, the lifter being normally held in close proximity to the casing, but can be easily drawn downwardly to use it to lift the lid of a stove or accomplish any desired result.
The above construction will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and, referring to the drawing accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in whic Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved support or hanger, showing the same used in connection with a stove. Fig. 2 is a longitu- Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line at :20 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line y y of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a conventional form of cooking-stove 1,having removable lids 2, and in connection with the stove a lid-lifter 3 is employed, the lifter being adapted to engage in recesses 4 formed in the lids in order to remove the same from the openings 5 of the stove 1.
My invention resides in a support or hanger which is mounted upon the ceiling 6 of the compartment in which the stove 1 is used or uponthe wall of said compartment adjacent to said stove. The support or hanger embodies a rectangular casing 7, consisting of a supporting-plate 8, having depending end walls 9 9, side walls 10 10, and a bottom plate 11. At one end of the casing 7 I mount two transverse metallic partitions 12 12, the partitions being flanged, as at 14, in order that they may be secured to the plates 8 and 11. Extending through the partitions 12 12 and journaledin the ends 9 9 of the casing is ashaft 15, and mounted upon said shaft between the partitions is a spiral band-spring 16, having its one end secured to the shaft 15, as at 17, while its opposite end is secured to the plate 8, as at 18.
Upon the shaft 15, between the partitions 12 and the endwall 9, I mount a roller 19, having a peripheral groove 20, and attached to said roller is a cord, rope, or chain 21, the free end of which passes through a slot 22, formed in the plate 11, and is attached to the stove-lifter 3, as at 23. The end of the rope or cord which is fastened to the lifter is provided with awasher 24,which prevents the end of the cord or chain from passing through the slot 22 of the casing when the lifter is detached from said cord or rope.
In practice the spring 16 is adapted to normally retain the cord or rope 21 around the roller 19, and when it is desired to use a stove-lifter the same is grip ed and pulled downwardly and inserted in t e recess of one of the lids 2 to remove the lid from the opening of the stove, at which time upon the lifter being released the spring 16 returns it to its normal position. hown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.)
The lifter or whatever article may be se cured to the end of the cord or rope 21 will be normally held in a suspended position convenient to a person desiring to use the same, at the same time not interfering in any manner with the general operation of the stove.
My improved support or hanger prevents the lifter or like article from becoming lost or displaced, and while I have herein shown the preferred form of construction it is obvious that such changes as are permissible by the appended claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A support or hanger for stove articles em- ITO bodying a casing, said casing having a supporting-plate and a bottom late formed with a slot, side Walls, and en walls, transverse metallic partitions mounted Within said casing, at one end thereof, a shaft extending through said partitions and having its ends journaled in the ends of said casing, a spring surrounding said shaft between said partitions and having one end fixed to said shaft While its opposite end is-fixed to said casing,
a roller mounted upon said shaft, said roller having a peripheral groove, a rope or cord secured to said roller and normally Wound thereon, the end of said rope extending through said slot.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
ANDREW A. ZAGST.
