Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, iv may concern.-

Be it known that I, PETER H RBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to produce a cheap, simple, and eflicient folding bed substantial in construction, neat in appearance, and automatic in its action. It belongs to that class of folding beds in which a settee is connected to the upright bed-framework, so that when the bed is folded and not in use a settee is formed, and when the bed is unfolded and let down for use the settee will form a bearing under the bed or box containing the mattress.

Heretofore the settee construction in order to allow the bed to be used had to be let down into proper position by human agency. This objection I overcome by so combining the settee with the framework or bed proper that when the bed or box mat-' tress is let down for use the settee automatically finds its proper position-the position it is destined to occupy in useand when the bed is made up and folded the settee automatically finds its normal position. I also so construct and connect the seat of the setteeth at it slides out of the way when the bed is let down and back into position when the bed is placed up in its normal position.

Another feature of my invention enables me to let down the ends of the settee and support them on a plane with the setteeseat, so that the settee can be used as a couch or davenport or as a lounge.

The various features and advantages of my invention will readily become apparent from the following description and claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, the folding bed and settee being in their normal condition when not in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my invention, the folding part of the bed being partly withdrawn from the framework, the settee moving out and the seat moving backwardly, the bed being in the position assumed when it is'about to unfold. Figure 3 is a sectional view of the framework and settee, the bed being shown unfolded, a side view of the mechanism for automatically forcing the settee outward and inward, the settee and framework being the only parts shown in section. Fig. 4 is a detached view of one of the settee-arms and side of settee, showing bracket for supporting the arm.

A represents a framework composed of two sides, a back, and bottom of the usual or any ordinary construction. B'represents a settee having a seat O and ends D. The settee B is .connected to the framework by two arms E, one on each side, these arms E bemg rigidly connected to the settee B.

F represents a box-mattress or a framework containing the mattress of any description. This box-mattress F folds or doubles u at or near its middle Gr, so that when folded up it fits into the framework A and when down and in an extended position lies flat, both parts lying in the same plane, legs, as H, being connected to the outer end of the box-mattress F, which legs or supports fold into the box F when placed in settee position. This box-mattress or framework F swings in and out and up and down on the hinges K, attached to the cross-piece L at the front of the framework A. Two or more of the hinges K may be used. This box-mattress or framework F may be connected to the framework in any other desired manner. The seat 0 is connected to the cross-piece L by springs M or in any other desired manner.

The seat O slides on inclined ways N on each side of the settee B, on the inside thereof, sliding down on said way when the bed is unfolded and up when the bed is folded.

The ends D of-the settee B are hinged at I to the sides of the said settee, so that they can be let down when the bed is unfolded. Braces or brackets, as R, are present at the side of the settee on which the ends D may rest, so that a lounge or couch is formed.

I may use any device for supporting these ends of the settee in the same plane with seat O and as a ratchet, lever, or the like.

S represents cross-piece, brace, or elongated staple attached to each side of the framework A, on the inside thereof, T representing a lever pivoted to said brace S.

At the inner end of the arms E, I attach a link or a brace V. A link W is pivotally connected at X to the side of box-mattress F and at Y pivotally connected to the lever T. The point where lever T is connected to brace S is designated by the letter Z. The point where bar or link V is connected loosely to the arms E is designated by the letter W and where it is loosely connected to lever T is designated by the letter W The invention operates as follows, to wit nected to said settee and said framework, for

When in normal position, the bed appears as in Fig. 1. The operator takes hold of the box-mattress F at the top and pulls it out and down, as shown in Fig. 2, until it as sumes the position shown in Fig. 8, the mattress having been unfolded and the legs H extended. The box-mattress moves up and down on the hinges K. When the bed is up in settee position, the lever T and its connec tions appear as shown in dotted lines in Fig.

3. When the box-mattress is being moved down, the lower end of the lever T is moved forward by reason of the link Wmoving forward and upward'with the box-mattress, to which it is attached. This forcing forward of the lower end of the lever T pushes thelink or bar V, the link V moving forward and downward, the lower end of lever T and the .bar V moving in the arc of a circle to accommodate themselves to the varying niovements of the box-mattress as it is pulled down. This forward movement of lower part of lever T and the link or bar V in de scribing the arc of a circle pushes the settee B forward or outward, as shown in Fig. 3, and when the box-mattress is folded up again they (the system of levers and links) assume their normal condition. (Shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 3.) In pulling down the box-mattress the seat C of the settee B, being connected by springs to the cross-piece L, is held in position, the settee sliding away from the seat, the seat moving down on the ways N out of the way. What I claim as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a folding bed, the combination of the upright framework, a settee, a folding box containing the mattress, said box movable in and out of said upright framework, to form a bed, in combination with mechanism, connected to said settee and said framework, for automatically moving the settee outward when the box-mattress is let down and pulling it back into normal position when the box-mattress is folded up, and a seat for the settee, said seat sliding down out of the way when the settee is moved out and sliding back when the settee is moved into its normal position, combined and operating as set forth. i

2. In a folding bed, the combination of the upright framework, a settee, a folding box containing the mattress, said box movable in and out of said upright framework, to form a bed, in combination with mechanism, conarate bed-frame and settee-frame, in combination with mechanism connected to said main frame, bed-frame and settee-frame for automatically moving said settee frame outward and inward when the bed-frame is moved down or up, combination with a movable settee-seat which moves off and on the settee-frame when the bed-frame is moved down or up, as and for the purposes set forth.

4. In a folding bed, the combination of the upright framework, a settee, a folding box containing the mattress, said box movable in and out of said upright framework to form a bed, arms on said settee, lever-and-link mechanism connected to the upright framework and to the said arms, said lever-and-link mechanism moving the settee out or in horizontally as the folding box-mattress is pulled down and unfolded or put up and folded, said settee when moved out forming a support for the bed-frame, all combined and operating as set forth.

5. In a folding bed, the combination of the upright framework, a settee, a folding box containing the mattress, said box movable in and out of said framework to form a bed,

arms extending from the settee into the' framework, a link on said arms, a link on said folding box, a lever extending between said links and fulcrumed on a brace in the side of the upright framework, said lever and links so connected and pivoted together as that when the folding box is lowered out of the framework the settee will be moved out horizontally to form a support for the bed and when the folding box is set up into normal position, the settee will be pulled back horizontally into normal position, as and for the purposes set forth.

6. In a folding bed, a main framework, and separate bed-framework and settee, levers pivotally connected to the main framework, and at their upper ends loosely connected to one end of a link, said link at its forward end pivotally connected to the separate bedframe; and at their lower ends said levers connected loosely to one end of a link, said link at its forward end pivotally connected to the settee, said mechanism moving the settee horizontally forward and backward when the separate bed-frame is moved down and up, as and for the purposes set forth.

7.
