Description

IINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. MALTBI', OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASS'IGNOR To CLEVELAND CAR SPECIALTY COMPANY, oF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA.
RooF-oAmlNE.
Specication of Letters Patent,
' Patented July s, 1906.
lApplication filed August 2,190.5. Serial No'l 272,327.
and useful Improvement in Roof-Carlines, of
which improvement the following is a specification. i A e.
My invention relates to sheetor plate metal roof carlines of the general type whichis-exemplified 4in Letters Patent of the United States No. 649,171' granted and issued Vto me and to Broderick Haskell (as assignee of twothirds of the right) under dateof May-8, 1900. The object of my present" invention is to provide a roofcarline embodying the advantageous features of that set forth in Letters Patent No. 649,171 aforesaid and which Shall further afford improved facilities for being supported on the car side plates and for acting as a tie between the opposite Sides of the car.v A p t The improvementv claimed is hereinafter fully set forth. C In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view, in elevation showing slightly more than one-half in' length of a roof-carline embodying my invent1on;,Fig. 2, a plan' or topview; Flg. 3, an end view; FIg. 4,' a
transverse section on the line a a, of Fig., 1 and Fig.l 5, a similar section indicating the lateralilanges as extending throughout the length of the carline.
In the practice of my invention I provide a roof-carline which is formed of sheet or plate metal, preferably by being pressed or shaped In a die or mold.- The body of the carline is integral and comprises a web 1 of inverted U or channel transverse section and lateral.
flanges 1"., projecting from the bottoms of the opposite side members of the web. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, the flanges 1al extend from each end of the body for a portion only of its lengthas, say, about one-sixth thereofan are tapered inwardly or toward the middle of the carline; but, as indicated in Fig. 5, said -flanges may, if desired, extend throughout its entire length. The web 1 is downwardly inclined from its middle to each of its ends at such an angle as may be ada ted to impart the desired pitch to the roof. tis also -the flanges.
I iprrefe'rably, as shown, diminished in depth om its middle portion toward each of its ends for a comparatively short distance-ias,l say, about one-sixth of its length from each end; but-it may, if desired, be made of uniform depth throughout.
The ends of the carlirie extend completely overa'nd are supported on the side plates of the car-frame, (indicated'in dotted lines at t-he left of 1.,) and in order to provide for the secure attachment of the -carline to theside plates and the'connection of the op osite sides of the car, so as to dispense wit I the usual tlc-rods, downwardly-turned Hang-es 1d Vare formed on the ends of the body 1, said flanges abuttinv'against the outer faces of the side plates andbe'ing secured thereto by horizontal bolts oles 8El are also formed in the lateral flanges 1a of the body for the reception of vertical bolts by which said fiange are connectedl to the side plates.
To provide suitable bearings for the ridgepole and purlins of the roof, themetal of the web 1 is turned downwardly at the middle of the carline and at pro er distances between the middle and the en s, so as to formseats` 6 of channel-section .in which the ridge-pole and purlins are fitted and to which theyare secured by bolts passing through holes 8 in t-he seats. v
The practical advantages. of strength, lightness, and facility of application in ordinary car-framing which are presented by my improvement will be obvious tov those familiar with railroad-car construction, and it will also .be apparent that it may be employed in connection with a car-roof of any desired type.
I claim "as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A sheet or plate metal roof-,carline having. an integral body comprising a web of inverted U or channelsection, lateral flanges projecting from the sidel members thereof, and downwardly-turned flanges atthe ends of the web and lateral flanges, orming uninterrupted flat end walls to the channel or U.
2. A sheet or plate metal roof-carline having anintegral body comprisingla web of in- 1passing through holes 8b in IOO eral flanges projecting from the-side members v verted L5 or 'hane section., the sdemarm bers of which are of unforrp'depth for sme. t nei 'Cr-U, f distance on each sdeof its center and them: v y v f after diminish in depth vtoward its ends, latv GEORGE TBL Witnesses:
