Letters Patent No. 82,440, dated September 22, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINQS FOR BUTTONS 651;: Stimuli: rrfttttt in in than 32mm haunt nth mating tart tito stun.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN. I
Be it known that I,-ALFRED RIX, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and improved Mode of Fastening Buttons to Garments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a central section v ew of a button attached to the cloth with my fastener, the section being transverse as to the button and washer, and longitudinal as to the shank. 1
Figures 2, 5, and 6 are similar views of varied modes of attaching the shank to the body of the button.
Figure 3 is a top view of the-washer closed, and
Figure 4 is a top view of the washer open.
Similar letters of reference inthe different figures indicate the same parts;
The nature of my invention consists in forming the common rivet and washer-fastening by bending or springing the washer over onbehind the rivet-head ready made, instead of first passing the rivet through the washer, and then heading it in the usual way.
The shank, made of some strong metal, with a head small and rounded, so as to pass easily through the fabric without injuring it, constitutes the chief and constant element of my device, whilst thewasher may be varied, both in style and application, indefinitely.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention belongs, or to which it most nearly appertain's, to make and use the same, I will 'proceed to describe it particularly with reference to the drawings.
The shank consists-of the bod a, the neck I), and head .0.
The body a, upon which the button-hole bears, should not be too large for thehole, and yet large enough tomllow a shoulder at its junction, with the neck sufiicient to prevent the body from slipping through the neckhole.
The body of the shank may be secured to the body of the button in any proper manner, either rigidly or by a joint. V
Fig. 2 shows a ball-and-socket attachment; fig1'5 shows a hook-eye or staple attachment; fig. 6 shows a plain shank, with a shoulder formed by a loose ferrule of rubber or metal.
In many cases, and especially in buttons designed for ornament, the shoulder can be dispensed with altogether, and the button allowed to rest directly against the garment.
The button is held to the garment by the washer, figs. 3 and 4, which fits closely about the neck, and into which the head may be countersunk or not, thus forming a fastening equivalent to a rivet and washer.
The washer is prepared for application by being divided on one side, and left open far enough to go over the head or across the neck of the shank, as shown in fig. 4. I v
The button isfastened to the gnrment'e passingth'e head of the shank through a hole made in the garment with a bodkin, and then putting the washer-over the head, or across the neck, and ciosing it .by'nippers applied to its sides-at a: and y.
A slight indenturc in the face of the jaws of the nippers, at the points of contact with the washer. will facili-w tate the operation. I
In case the shank is jointed to the button so as to swing l its exterior end to aid in passing it' through the garment. I
As the nippers cause the bending to take place entirely at the point opposite to the opening at z, in order to make a good fit and neatappearance, the washerrnnst be formed accordingly, thatis, oblong, asshown in fig. 4.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by. Letters Patent, is-
The headed shank and open washer for securing the button to the cloth or garment, constructed substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
oosely, n can be held by the nippers applied to ALFRED RIX.v
