To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER M. CRAIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trace-Carriers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in harness, and particularly to trace-carriers, substantially such as shown in the application iiled by me December 2, 1904, Serial No. 235,776, of which this application is a division.

This invention has for its object the production of a trace-carrier wherein the wear of leather upon leather is avoided and wherein the trace may have freedom of movement for longitudinal adjustment and also Jfreedom oi movement longitudinally and vertically with respect to the back-pad, thereby avoiding jarrinor or strain upon it.

With this object in view the invention consists in the structure and combination of parts, as herein described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 represents in side elevation a portion oi a harness embodying the invention Fig. 2, a side elevation of one element of the trace-carrier; Fig. 3, a longitudinal medial section of the trace and hame-tug; and Fig, 4 a perspective view of the other element of the trace-carrier.

The back-pad is indicated by 5; the ilexible metallic hame-tug, consisting of separable links, by 6; the wear-leather connected thereto by 7, the trace by 8, and the tracecarrier by 9 and 10.

The part 9 ofthe trace-carrier, which may be termed the billet-loop, consists of a loop provided at its ends with eyes through which to pass the billet 11. In each eye thereof there is a stud 12 for insertion in an eyelet of the billet for holding said loop in place. The other part 10 of the trace-carrier is a double loop located between the loop 9 and billet 11 and has the trace 8 passed through both of its outwardly-curved ends. It is thereby secured to the billet-loop and likewise secures the trace thereto. This double loop also serves as a means for connecting the rear end ofthe hame-tug to the back-pad and for keeping it in line with the trace. To

this end it receives an eye 13, formed on the last link of the haine-tug, and has preferably notches 14, wherein said eye may rest back of the line of the trace and so not interfere at all with the trace.

Each link of the hame-tug has a cross-bar with which a hook 15 on the end of the trace may be engaged at will in taking up or letting out the trace. For a further description of these details reference may be had to the other pending application, referred to above. By preference, however, the hook 16 is substituted for the clip shown in said a plication for connecting the haine-tug to tlhe hame, since thereby the hame-tug may then be directly applied to the staple on the usual form of hame, and so avoid riveting or other act in making the connection.

The invention claimed is- 1. A trace-carrier consisting of a loop for attachment to the back-pad and a .separate and distinct double loop inserted through the former loop and having outwardly-turned ends for the passage of a trace through both of said ends.

2. A trace-carrier consisting of a billetloop provided with eyes at its ends for attaching it to the billet of the back-pad and another and separate loop having passages at both ends, throughwhich to run a trace, and constructed intermediate of said ends for location in and free movement in said billet-loop.

3. A trace-carrier consisting in the combination with a loop provided with securing means at its ends of a separate and distinct curved double loop `resting transversely in the former loop and projecting forward thereof and constructed to receive a trace through its projecting ends.

4. A trace-carrier consisting of two separate and distinct curved loops interlocking transversely with one another and freely movable one upon the other and each constructed at its ends for attachment to a strap.

5. The combination with the billet-loop of a separate and distinct curved, double loop provided with notches below the curve at the forward end thereof for the reception of an eye on the rear end of a hame-tug.

6. The combination with a haine-tug provided with an eye on its rear end, of a tracecarrier consisting of a billet-loop attached to the billet and of a curved, double loop pass IOO ing through said billet-loop and said eye and having a trace passed through both of its ends outside of both the billet-loop and said eye.

7. The combination with a haine-tu provided with an eye on its rear end, an provided at intervals alonfr the length thereof with means for adjustably connecting a trace thereto, of a trace-carrier consisting of a vertical loop at the back-pad and a separate and distinct double loop located transversely in and freely movable in the vertical loop and through both of which ends the trace passes I5 forward to its connection with the hame-tug.
