UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIOE.
EDMUND MAUARTNEY,'OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HARMONB. AMERLING, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENN- SYLVANIA.
COMB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1906.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND C. MAoART- NEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chestnut Hill, in the city of Philadelphia, county ofPhiladelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Comb, of which the following is a specification.
It isone object of the present invention to provide a neat, durable, and eflicient separable comb of simple structure that is comparatively cheap to manufacture.
A further object is to provide a separable comb having its members so arranged that it can be readily assembled and disassembled for cleansing purposes. a
A still further object of the invention is to provide a separable comb that has the appearance of an ordinary comb.
To these and other ends hereinafter set forth the invention, stated in general terms, comprises the improvements to be presently described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a comb embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the parts in a semiseparated state. Fig. 4 is a sectional view. Fig. 5 is a plan view illustrating the relation of the teeth to each other, and Fig. 6 shows the inner faces of the respective members.
In the drawings, a and b are members of a separable comb, each being provided with teeth 0. These members may be held together by means of a removable tubular holder d, although the means shown in the drawings is merely one type of holder and other fastening mediums may be employed.
As shown in Fig. 5, the teeth 0 are arranged so as to produce a staggered effect when the members a and I) are placed in position for assembling, so that they may fit one within the other and produce an efl'ect similar to an ordinary comb. Each tooth is provided at its upper extremity with a beveled portion e, that is adapted to rest against a similar beveled portion f upon the part h of the respective members to insure stability of the respective parts when assembled. Each beveled portion e of the teeth is provided with a shoulder g, Fig. 6. These shoulders tend to fill up the space between the teeth when assembled, thus preventing dirt from accumulating between the parts. The part h of each member is shown as grooved, as at i, for the holder (1.
Among the advantages to be derived from the above-described device mention may be made of the following: The comb being easily assembled and disassembled can be cleansed after its use, thus rendering it sanitary, which obviously is advantageous. The structure is simple, and therefore inexpensive, and since the appearance of the comb is to all intents and purposes the same as an ordinary comb the commercial value of the article is at once apparent. I
It will be obvious to those skilledin the art to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence the invention is not limited further than the prior state of the art may require; but,
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new,- and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A separable comb comprising a pair of members forming a back, said members being equipped with alternately-arranged teeth having beveled tops said teeth interdigitating with each other throughout their entire cross-section, beveled portions upon said members between the teeth, and means for holding said members together, substantially as described.
2. A separable comb comprising a pair of parallel members having faces that abut, alternately-arranged teeth having beveled tops depending from said members said teeth interdigitating with each other throughout their entire cross-section,' beveled portions upon said members between the teeth and means for securing the members together to form a back, substantially as described.
3. A comb comprising two members equipped with teeth having beveled tops, beveled portions upon said members between the teeth, and means for holding said members together, substantially as described.
4. A comb comprising two members equipped with teeth having beveled tops, beveled portions upon said members between the teeth, shoulders formed upon the upper extremity of each tooth, and means for hold- I upon said members between the teeth and a ing said members together, substantially as tubular holder fitted to said grooved faces to described. form a back, substantially as described:
} '5. A separable comb comprising a pair of In testimony whereof I have hereunto v 5 parallel members Whose outer faces are signed my name.-
grooved and Whose inner faces abut, alternately-arranged teeth having beveled tops I EDMUND MAOARTNEY' depending from the said members said teeth Witnesses: interdigitating with each other throughout W. J. JAoKsoN 10 their entire cross-section, beveled portions EVA E. EDGE.
