JOHN T. MCCARTHY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO JOHN J. RIORDON, JR., OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
VAGINAL SYRINGE.
Patented June 12, 1906.
Application filed August 28,1905. Serial'No. 276,019.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. MCCARTHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, and State of Maryland, have in vented certain new and useful Improvee ments in Vaginal Syringes, of which the following is a specification. j
My invention relates to an improvement in vaginal syringes.
The object is to provide a simple surgical appliance for irrigating purposes which shall comprise few and comparatively small parts not likely to get out of order, easy to manipulate, and effectual inthe performance of its function.
With the foregoing objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a section through the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view showing the dilators partly closed, dotted lines indicating them closed; and Fignll is a similar view showing the dilators open or apart.
A represents the nozzle of a syringe having perforations 1 1 at the free end to form a spray and enlarged, as at 2, at the other end to receive the rubber tube. The nozzle is bent at or near the center, as at 3, so that the two members formed are an obtuse angle to each other. A collar 5 is shrunk or otherwise is secured upon the nozzle, and a pin 6 extends therefrom, forming a pivotal support for the two dilators 7 7, which are provided with bearings 8 8, which receive the pin 6, by which the dilators are pivoted in place, a nut 9 being removably screwed on the threads of the pin to hold the parts together.
The dilators are preferably composed of slender rods bent around into tapering U shape, as shown in Fig. 1, to embrace and inclose the spray end of the nozzle when together, and at the outer end of the dilator the guards 10 10 are formed to limit the further insertion of the syringe.
I/Vhen inserted, the dilators are together, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3, with the spray end of the nozzle and the nozzle housed therein, so that the rounded free ends of the dilator are of suflicient size and curvature to prevent injury to the delicate parts of the organ to be irrigated. After insertion by gently pressing upon the handles the interior walls are dilated, and thus the spray is free to reach the parts to be cleansed.
In this way a simple and effectual article is provided which may be manufactured at a comparatively small initial cost and which will operate most effectually in the performance of its functions.
Slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a nozzle, a sleeve thereon and a pin projecting from the sleeve, of a pair of dilators pivoted on the pin and forming a housing about the spray end ofthe nozzle when together, and handles on their outer ends.
2. The combination with a nozzle, a sleeve thereon and a pin projecting from the sleeve, of a pair of dilators pivoted on the pin and forming a housing about the spray end of the nozzle when together, and handles on their outer ends, said pin screw-threaded at its free end, a nut removably secured thereon, and bearings on the dilators embracing each other and pivotally mounted on the pin.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN T. MCCARTHY.
