Description

CHARLES M. GILBERT, OF FHILELPH-IA., PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 82,305, dated Septemer 22, 1858.
IlllllliOVIllll BBDSTEAWFASTENING;
@the finbuie referrer fait tlna'r'etim rtn rar-making @an rf its nun.
To ALL WHoM IrMAY conchas:I
Be n known that I, calms M. GILBERT, er' Philadelphie, in the coasty'sf rhiiadeiphia, in the state bf Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Bedstead-Fastening; and I do hereby declare 'that the following is a full and exactA description thereovreference being had to the accompanying drawings, andthe letters of reference m'a'rked thereon.
The' nature of my invention consists of a movable bolt, with a. T head, and a slot .or groove in which a key or wedge is to work on n line with the T-head, and a spring so placed as to allow ,fthe bolt to recede, orcanse it to advance so as tobe easily adjusted in the post, -as the key is pressed down or,"y drawn up, the key having on the small end a flange to keep it from being detached from the bolt, the head of?" the bolt`being connected with a tube or barrel, in the head of' which is an opening to correspond with the head of the bolt, the tube or barrel aforesaid being of metal, and screwed into the post of the bedstead then, as the key orrwedge is pressed down, compressing the spring, it causes the bolt 'to recede, drawing with it the tube er barrel, and so closing up the joint or vfastening of post and rail.
vTo enable others skilled in the art'to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation. Y i
I iirst prepare a bolt of iron of suicient size, shaped as in Figure 1, in plan annexed, also an iron key or wedge, as in Figure 2, and an ordinary wire spring, Figure 3. I then take the bed-rail, Figure 4, and make two openings in it: in the end, one marked A, to receive the spring 8 and the bolt l; the other, a transverse'opening marked B, made in the side of the bed-rail 4, toV receive the key 2. The bolt 1 contains a slot or groove marked D, whose perpendicular side bears the formof an inclined plane. ,-Having inserted the spring 3 and the bolt 1 into the' end-opening A, leaving the head to project, and pressing down the bolt 1 upon the spring 3until the slot or groove D comes opposite the opening B, Iinsert into this slot Dthe key 2, and push it, 2, into the said slotuntil it, the key, passes the o pening A., thus holding the bolt 1,-the key 2, and the spring 3 in their positions. i
I next prepare an iron tube or barrel, marked 5, whose inside diameter is suiiicient to allow the head C to turn freely in it, and whose head has aropening, marked E, of e. shape corresponding 'to the shape of the bolts head C, the outside of the 'said tube or barrel forming a screw. This tube or barrel, I screw rmly intothe bedpost, marked 6, with the opening E transverse the post 6.
To bring the parts together, (the bolt, key, and wedge being in their positions, as described above in the paragraph next before the last,) I raise the key- 2, thereby turning the bolt 1 until the T-head C is 4turned to a position which, allows it to enter theopening E in the head' of the ltube or barrel 5, then bringing the key or wedge 2 to its first position, thereby turning the bolt 1 so that the flanges of its T-head C act as a guard tol prevent the bolt 1 from passing out of the tube 5, through the opening E. I force the said wedge 2 further through the slot D. The inclined plane of the wedge 2, riding up the inclined plane of the perpendicular `face of the slot-D, causes the bolt l'to recede deeper into the longitudinal opening A, thereby drawing up the post 6 to the rail 4, closing the joint and making ittight.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a key or wedge, 2, with the bolt 1 tube or barrel 5, spring 3, slotted rail 4, and pst 6, ,as hereinabove described.
CHARLES M. GILBERT.
