Description

PATENTED JUNE 5, 1906.
L. P. EARL.
BODKIN.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 3, 1905.
Witnmoeo Uttozmugo LEWIS F. EARL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BODKIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 5, 1906.
Application filed November 3, 1905. Serial No. 285,769.
To call whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Lnwrs F. EARL, a citi-' zen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Bodkin, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful bodkin, which is so constructed as to allow free passage through the hem of a garment and at the same time firmly hold the tape or ribbon while being carried through.
It further consists of novel means for threading the bodkin.
It further consists of novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figures 1, 2, and 3 represent perspective views of a bodkin embodying my invention, showing various forms of the same and of the serrations or teeth. Figs. 4 and 5 represent perspective views showing the manner of using the bodkin. Fig. 6 represents an elevation of another form.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the bodkin, being preferably formed of thin material and having stamped or otherwise formed therefrom the resilient tongue 2, which is preferably integral with the body portion. On each side of the tongue are side pieces 3 and 4, which are connected with or carry the stationary bar 5. On the free end of the tongue are the serrations or teeth 6, which interfit the serrations or teeth 7 on the bar 5, it being noted that the serrations or teeth are formed with substantially no space therebetween. 8 and 9 designate cut-away portions in the tongue forming a slot between the said tongue 2 and said side pieces 3 and 4 on each side of the said tongue for a purpose hereinafter described.
It will be noted that the ribbon or tape upon being inserted between the ton ue and the opposing edge of the bar is firmly lield by shaping itself to the serrations or teeth, and which latter by interfittin form a wed e, so that the ribbon or tape will be firmly held between said teeth, and when the bodkin is pulled through the tongue will be pressed against the ribbon, or, in other words, the tension will cause the teeth of the bodkin to more firmly grasp and hold the ribbon. In order that the ribbon or tape can be threaded and inserted in position, I employ the cut-away portions 8 and 9 in the tongue, so that the ribbon can be first threaded through one of the slots so formed, as shown in Fig. 4, after which it is very easy to place the same between the teeth or serrations on the tongue and bar. It will be seen from the above description that by reason of the formation of the bodkin out of a thin material a free passage through the hem of the garment is permitted and at the same time the tape or ribbon is firmly held while being carried through, thus obviating the necessity of tying the bodkin, which makes a bulky knot or of leaving a long end of material to allow for pulling out.
It will be evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction.
herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a' device of the character described, a flat body, a flexible tongue movable transversely thereof, said tongue being normally in the same plane as the body, serrations on the free end of said tongue, a stationary bar forming part of said body and opposing said free end, serrations on the said bar adapted to cooperate with the serrations on the said tongue.
2. In a device of the character described, a flat body, a flexible tongue on said body normally in the same plane as said body, serrations on said tongue, side pieces on said body extending adjacent said tongue, a bar con necting said side pieces, teeth on said bar interfitting said first-mentioned teeth, said tongue and said side pieces being so related that slots or openings are formed between the same.
