Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 29, 1906.
Application filed July 25,1905. Serial No. 271.192.v
To (LZZ whom it may con/cern..-
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. CAssEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Table-Seats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a seat adapted to fold beneath a table, and while the invention is adapted tobe applied to tables of various sizes and sha es, such as library and diningroom tab1es,If have .for purposes of illustration shown the card-table.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, pointed out 1n the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspectiveview showing the seats in position for use. Fi 2 is a similar the seats in a olded position. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken diametrically through the table and showing a seat upon one side in a folded position and upon the other side drawn out for use.
In 'the drawings, A represents the table as a whole, the same being supported b? a hcentral upright post A', which carries a p form A2, and upon said platform spaced apart are upwardly and outwardly inclined side pieces A3, suitably braced, which side pieces support the table A proper.
The post A rests upon a piece B,'which base itself is slightly elevated above the ground by a plurality of short legs B At points adjacent to or immediately above the legs B the base is cut out, as shown at C, and in said cut-out portion is end of a seat-standard C', and the outer face of this standard is longitudinali rooved, as shown at C2. This standard wi l e equal in number to the cut-out portionsC and will be spaced at equal distances a art around the table, and in the drawings Il) have shown a table provided with four of these standards. Each standard is provided with a supporting-leg C3, the upper end of which is plvoted in the upper end portion of the groove C2 and when not in use, asshown inFig.v 1, is adapt- (d to be folded into the groove, as shown at To the upper end of each seat-standard C By referring tol Fig. 1 it same applied to a circular yreceptacle formed below the top,
pivoted the lower will be obvious that a receptacle is formed below the table A, the bottom of the said reeeptacle being the platform A2, and the side pieces A3 form a ortion of the side walls of the saidl receptac e. It will be noted from Fig. 2 that when the seat-standards C are folded inwardly'toward the table the seats C4 will fit in the spaces between the side pieces A3 and will form the remainder of the side walls of said receptacle, entirely closing the same, and that the receptacle can be opened upon any side by swinging one of the seats ,C4 outwardly and downwardly.
This rece tacle forms a very convenient depository or keeping playing-cards, scorecards, &c.
A ridge C5 is formed transversely u on the inner face of the standard C and orms a suitable stop.
Having t us fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a table having a receptacle formedv below the top and partially open at sides, of seat-standards pivoted to the table at their lower ends, seats carried by the said standards, said standards being adapted to su port the same when in position for use, tllie said seats being ada ted to form side portions of the receptacle w en the standards are folded against the table.
2. The' combination with a table having a side pieces, s aced apart and forming a portion of the s1de walls of the receptacle, standards hinged to and adapted to be folded against the table, supporting-legs pivotedto and carried by the standards, seats carried by the standards and adapted to fit in the s ace between the side pieces of the receptac e when the standards are folded.
3. A device of the kind described comprising a table having a base portion, said base portion having cut-out portions, standards pivoted at their lower ends in the said cutout portions and longitudinally grooved in their upper faces, su porting-legs pivoted in the up er portions o said grooves and adapted to fie folded within the groove, and seat portions carried by the upper end of each standard, said standards and seat portionsbeing adapted to be swung inwardly and upwardly beneath the table.
4. A table of the kind described compris IOO 2 p ssaausa I ing a base havin out-out portions, a center when the standards' are foldedv beneath the post carried b t e base, a platform carried table, to t in the spaces' between the side 1o y the ost, ed side pieoesi spaced lapart pieces.
v carried' ythe` platform the to supported l' t' 5 by the side pieces, 'seat-standardg pivoted in EDWARD. H'CASSEL the cut-out `portions. ofthebase,fa'su portf -Witnesses'z l 7, ing-leg pivoted to each of said standar s, and DANIEL W. HAMM,
seats carried by the standardsnd adapted ,w/ALQRED T. MILLER.
