the bowl without impairing the draft, thereby insiu'ng a long smoke and at the same time obviating rapid consumption oi the tobacco, luidde-sti ,to provide for removal of the ashes and residue and to dissipate any saliva that may tend to collect in the bottom of the bowl whereby the disagreeable noise incident to obviated. The invention consists of a perforated plate or diaphragm adapted to form a ialse bottom within the bowl and a clip springing 'from or connected with said plate or talee bottom and located at one side thereof, said clip be .ing preferably an integral part oi the plate or diaphragm and having its outer member conn structed to make positive engagement with the ou r of the bowl, so as to prevent casual displacement oit the attachment when the pipe is inverted and the bowl tapped so as to dislodge any ashes that may be con t.. ed therein.

The outer side of the bowl is enlarge( or swelled. intermediate oi' its ends, as shown at Li, and this swell is utilized as a means for positively holding the attachment in place. The attachment consists, essentially, of the plate or diaphragm 5, which is perforated and of a diameter to snugly 'fit Within the lower portion of the bowl, so as to leave a chamber beneath said plate to insure arrple draft, notwithstanding the tobacco may e closely packed. The entrance to the clip is contracted, and tl peculiar formation of the member 8 of the clip enables the lower portion 9 of the mems ber 8 to bear against the lower portion of the bowl with sufficient pressure to retain the at tachment in place even if the pipe is inverted and the bowl smartly tapped. When the attachment is removed and it is found that it contains unconsumed tobacco, the latter may be replaced by means of the attachment and the smoke continued, thereby obviating' the necessity for relighting or the derangement of the tobacco.
