ELIJAH KING, OF SAMS, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNO'R OF ONE-FOURTH TO AOHILES KELLEY, OF PRYSE, KENTUCKY,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1906-.
Application filed November 29, 1905. Serial No. 289,643.
invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Car-Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to.
which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in automatic car-couplers; and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and efficient apparatus of this nature whereby cars may be conveniently uncoupled without the necessity of a person going between the cars and comprises a sprin -actuated hook with lever mechanism for tiIting the hook when it is desired to re lease the coupling by means of a rod connected to one endof the coupler-bar.
My invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrange ments of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a to plan view of my improved coupler, s owing the parts uncoupled; and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of one of the couplers with the parts shown in position to uncouple.
Reference now being the drawings by letter, A designates a platform which may be attached to the bottom of a car in any suitable manner, and B designates a coupler-bar, having a hook B at one end, and said coupler-bar is pivotally mounted upon a pin O, passing through a cross piece D, which connects the side pieces F, rising from said platform, and a spring G is fixed at one end to one of said pieces F, and its free end bears against the inner end of the coupler-bar, the office of said spring being to normally return the coupler-bar to a coupling position after said coupler-bar has been tilted to unoouple the car.
Pivotally connected to the inner end of the coupler-bar is a link K, which is connected had to the details of pivotally to one arm of an angle-lever N, which is mounted upon a pivotal pin O pass ing through a cross-piece O and said platform. An arm N of said lever N is pivotally connected to a locking member J, which is adapted to be reciprocated as the angle-lever is tilted and to be thrown intermediate the rear convexed edge of the coupler-bar and the adjacent strip F for the purpose of affording means whereby the coupler may be prevented from being accidentally tilted when held in a coupled relation.
S designates a curved resilient bar, which is fastened to one end of a strip F and provided for the purpose of guiding and throwing the coupler-bar of an approaching car, so that it will hook into the coupler-bar when they come together.
T designates a rod, the inner end of which is connected to an elongated eye T, fastened to the inner end of the coupler-bar B, and passes through the side F, where its end is turned to form a handle T whereby an operator by pulling upon said rod and against the tension of said spring G may cause the coupler-bar to tilt to effect an uncoupling and at the same time to cause the angle-lever N to tilt and the locking member J to be Withdrawn from its locking position intermediate the coupler-bar and the side F.
While I have shown a particular form of apparatus illustrating the details of my invention, it will be understood that the same may be varied in different ways to adapt the invention to different conditions without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a platform and sides therefor, a tiltin coupler-bar mounted intermediate said sides, a spring bearing against said coupler-bar, a pivotal angle-lever, a locking member pivoted to one of the arms of said angle-lever, and adapted to be normally positioned intermediate said coupler-bar and one of said sides, a link connect ing the other arm of said angle-lever with the coupling-bar, and a rod connected to said bar and passing through one of said sides, as set forth.
2. In combination with a platform and sides therefor, a tilting coupler-bar mounted sides and adapted to guide a coupling-bar as two cars come together to be coupled, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
ELIJ AH KING.
