engage e Chit-ill 9 or equivalent rope or cable-1 To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that l, l l ru'mti div Fonnnn, e. citizen of the United Stet-es, residing n t Leef, inthe county ol Burnett end Eltnte of l Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful linprwernents in Berni-Poweriituinp Pullers, cl which the following is e. specification.
This invention relntes to sturnp-pullers, pnrticulnrly those adopted to be opcreted by hand, and has for its particular object to provide n. device oi this char-rector by which an enormous pulling strein cun be exerted upon the stump or other object to be displaced with relatively little effort upon tl port of the opemtor.
A further obj not of the invention is to provide it simple, dursble, and reliable stumppuller which can be nicnulnctilred at small cost and which can be peeked into smell coinpass when not in use.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consist. n the conibi'nution and arrangement ol ports, wil be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the .ticconi panying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the uppeinlr-nl chums. is being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the ad vantages of the invention. g
In the drawings, Figure 1 is e pen-:pective view of my improved construction. big. 2 c detail view, partly in. section, showing the construction of the ends of the cl1=1in-g1nppling members; und Fig. 3 is n. dctuil perspective View of one end of the operetirig-lever and nttnclnnents.
Like characters of reference designnte corvernl views.
In the drawings, 1 designates eflercr hnving it handle portion 2 and e slotted or yoke portion 3 et the opposite end thereof.
Secured within the slot 4- oi the lever 1 are pivotellyenonnted grappling members or arms 5, the said members being secru'ed by bolts 6, passing through openings 6. The arms 5 are providedi ith curved or bent etensions 7, having en opening therethrough. The opening 8 is cpprcxinietely penr shnped with the end or nerrow portion ndjecent the extremity of "the arm. Tlhe extensio T withthc peer sped opcn' etitu'te grnpnlinwvolien whic.
i ednpta-id to .gs therein confor the purpose hereinafter more fully set forth. The ends of the arms 5 opposite the grappling-yoke are united by a spring 10-, se-
cured. within openings 11 and tending to sep erete the yoke members. One of the arms 5 is somewhat shorter than the other, so that onch may engage differen portions of the same chain and not interfere with. the operation of the other member.
Secured to the slotted portion 3 of the lever l. approximately midway between the bolts 53 is e guide ring or loop 12, through which the chain 9 passes. To this ring or loop 12 is secured a guide-rod l3, fastened thereto by n bolt 14 or other suitcblemeens.
The gnide-cr1n 13 passes through guide-yokes l5, secured to the curved or bent extension 7 of the arms 5. Pivotelly secured to the lever 1 between bolts 6 6 is n U-sheped bend carrying s hook 16. This band is preferably securcd to the lever 1 by the bolt 17. The chnin 9, which. is enge ed Within openings 8 and theguiding ring or con 12, passes around the sheave 18 of the pulley 19 and back into pmximity to the lever 1, where it is secured to the hook to. The sheave is provided with :1, slot or groove 20, designed to prevent twisting oi the chain es it is drawn through the pulley 19. I'nenns is connected to the hook 22, which is pivoted in the block of the pulley 18.
The operation of my improved stump puller is as follows: The chain or cable 21 is h st secured to the stump to be pulled, and its other end is connected to the pivoted hook 212. The chain 9 is then drawn tight and an' chorcd to some-rigid obj not in any well-l nown manner. The operating-lever is then 7 moved lmclrwerdend fcrwurd,a11d the grappling-voices S are alternately moved along the clinic 9, the yoke of one arm engaging a linlr or the chain while pressure is brought to beer upon the stump by the n'iovelnent of the lever 1, end the other grappling-yoke is ad-' veneed along the chain 9. A movement of the lever 1 in the opposite direction repeats the operation. The handle 2 is moved heels word and. forward, as described, until the stump uprooted and displaced.
Having thus described my invention, what A chain 21 or other cable or like ll cl eirn es novel, and desire to secure by Let- :te e lntcnt, is-
l l 1. In e device of the character describethe chnin ndepted to be anchored, pulling means connected-thereto, send means compris ng an operating-lever, a plurality of arms pivoted '0 connected thereto, said means comprising an operating-lever, a chaimguide carried thereby and surrounding thesaid chain, a plurality' of arms pivoted to the said lever, grappling-yokes carried thereby, said yokes surrounding the said chain and adapted to en gage therewith, a guide-rod carried by the operating-lever, guide-y0kes secured to the grappling-yokes and in engagement with the said guide-rod, and means adapted to connect the pulling means with a stump to be uprooted.
3. In a device of the character described, a chain adapted to beanchored, pulling means connected therewith, said means comprising an operating-lever, a chain-guide carried thereby and surrounding the said chain, *a plurality-of arms pivoted to the said lever, grappling members carried by the said arms and adapted to engage the said chain, a guide-rod carried by the operating-lever, guide-yokes secured to the grappling members and in engagement with the said guiderods, a pulley about which the said chain passes, a hook carried by the pulling means to which one end of the said chain is attached, means adapted to connect the said pulley with a stump to be uprooted, and a pivoted hook interposed between the pulley and the said last-named means.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature I in presence of two Witnesses.
