Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1906.
Application filed March 6, 1905. Serial No. 248,689.
To aZZ whom it may concern/.
Be it known that I, TOBIAS PoLsTER, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to combination-cabinets and it consists of the novel features herein shown, described, and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a combination-cabinet embodying the prin ciples of my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear ele vation of the cabinet with the back in position for use as an ironing-board. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of the cabinet in use as a step-ladder. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the cabinet with all the parts in their normal po sitions. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the cabinet folded to be used as an ironing-board.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the posts 6 and 7 are framed together by the sill 8 at their lower ends and the cross-piece 9 at their upper ends, said posts resting upon the feet 10 and 11. The side pieces 12 and 13 extend backwardly from the posts 6 and 7, the lower rear corners of the side pieces restin upon the floor and serving as feet. The si e pieces 14 and 15 join with the side pieces 12 and 13 upon diagonal lines extending from the rear lower corners upwardly and forwardly. A shelf 16 is mounted between the side pieces 12 and 13 near their lower ends, and a second shelf 17 is mounted between the sidepieces near their centers and a top piece 18 is mounted upon the upper ends of the side pieces. A shelf 19 is mounted between the lower ends of the side pieces 14 and 15, and a shelf 20 is arranged between the side pieces 14 and 15 a short distance above the shelf 19. A top piece 21 is mounted upon the upper ends of the side pieces 14 and 15. The shelves 16 and 19 are on a level. The shelves 17 and 20 are on a level, and the top ieces 18 and 21 are on a level, the parting lines between said shelves and said top pieces being in the same plane as the diagonal parting lines between the side pieces 12 and 14 and 13 and 15. The top piece 21 is connected to the top piece 18 by hinges 22 and catches 23 connect the lower ends of the side pieces.
A board 24 connects the lower ends of the side pieces 14 and 15 and rests upon the floor. Braces 25 and 26 are secured against the rear edges of the side pieces 14 and 15 and to the board 24. A drawer 27 is arranged to slide through an opening suitably formed through the sill 8 under the shelf 16. The back 28 is connected near its center to the top piece 21 by hinges 29, so that the upper end of the back may swing forwardly and downwardly upon the top pieces 18 and 21 when it is desired to use the back as an ironingboard. A button 30, secured to the brace 25, engages the back to hold it in its vertical position. Various devices may be applied to the front upper face of back, such as the hooks 31, the clothes-bars 32, the shelf 33, and the mirror 34.
A swinging shelf is hinged to the rear edge of the shelf 19. Legs 36 are pivoted to the outer end of the shelf 35 to swing downwardly and support the shelf in a horizontal position, and a folding frame 37 ispivoted to the upper ends of the legs to swing upwardly and support the back 28 in a horizontal position. The frame and legs fold up with the shelf and all swing upwardly back of the shelf 20. Hooks 38 are secured to the lower face of the back 28, and teeth 39, carried by the frame, interlock with the hooks to connect the parts and hold the frame in its upright position.
When it is desired to use the cabinet as a step-ladder, the button 30 is arranged to hold the back 28 to the brace 25, the catches 23 are loosened, and the back is tipped over for wardly to a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 3. Then the shelves 16 and 17, the top piece 21, and the shelves 19 and 20 become the steps of the ladder.
I claim- 1. In a combination-cabinet, a body portion constructed of two parts vertically separable on diagonally-extending lines which parts are hinged together at their upper ends,
shelves arranged in the two parts of the frame, and a back section hinged to the uper rear corner of the rear one of the parts "orming the main frame; substantially as specified.
2. In a combination-cabinet, arectangular body portion comprising two parts hinged together at their upper ends, shelves hinged in the two parts of the body portion, a In testimony whereof I have signed my drawer arranged in the lower portion of the name to this specification in presence of two front one of the parts, a rear section hinged subscribing witnesses.
to the upper rear corner of the rear one of the TOBIAS POLSTER. 5 parts of the frame, and supports for the outer WVitnesses: end of the backwhen the same is swung into a ALFRED A. EIoKs,
horizontal position substantially as specified. EDw. M. HARRINGTON.
