UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH HAMM AND ANTON F. HAMM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLOTHES-LINE FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1906.
' specification.
Our invention relates to an improved device for fastening clothes-linesthat is to say, a means which can be applied to the ends thereof or intermediate of the points of attachnient of said line, whereby the same may be readily connected and the slack of the line taken up.
The particular object of our device is to provide such a fastener and slack-adjuster of simple and inexpensive construction.
A further object of this device is to obviate the necessity of tyin the ends of a line together, as by simply Toosening one end of the line having our device applied said line can be taken down quickly or the slack thereof quickly adjusted, which is often desirable in the constant use of the line.
To these and other ends, which will herein: after appear, our invention comprises the novel features of improvement and details of construction, which will presently be described and finally claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of the application of our improved clothes-line fastener. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of our device. Fig. 3 is a crosssection thereof, taken on a line A A, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of our device, showing the manner in which the ends of a line are held.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to Fig. 4, the numeral 1 indicates the body of our improved clothes-line fastener and slack-adjuster, which is constructed of any suitable material. In each end of the body 1 openings 2 and 2 are formed, the opening 2 communicating with a pocket 3,
which is for the purpose of receiving a knot 4, formed in one end 5 of a clothes-line. The opposite end 6 of the clothes-line is passed through the opening 2 and secured inany form of knot. The end 7, which contains the opening 2, is provided at the upper surface 7 thereof with a groove 8, which is a continuation of the rounded surface 8. The said surface 7 is shown as inclined longitudinally and is for the purpose of permitting therope to be tied flat upon the said surface 7, as shown at 9, Fig. 4. The rounded'surface 8 and groove 8 act as a sheave when it is desired to take up the slack of the rope, as shown by dotted lines 10, Fig. 4. Within the channel 11 of the body 1 we provide an incline 12, said incline facilitating the grasping of the end 6 of a line when inserted into the opening 2, as shown by dotted lines 13, Fig. 4, in obvious manner.
Our improved device is preferably constructed from an integral piece of metal and provides a simple form of clothes-line fastener and slack-adjuster which can quickly be applied and with which the slack in a line can be promptly adjusted.
Having now described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device of the character described, comprising an elongated body having a pocket intermediate the ends thereof, the said body being provided with an opening in one end thereof communicating with said pocket, a channel in said body adjacent to said pocket, said body being provided at its opposite end with an opening communicating with said channel, and an inclined plane in said chan nel adjacent to the opening communicating therewith.
