UNITED sures PATENT orrron Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ma 15, 1906.
Application filed December 13, 1905. Serial No. 291,608.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FRANK P. Penmans- GAST, a citizen of the United States, residing at DagusMines, in the county of Elk and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Arresters, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved construction of spark-arrester "for locomotives.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a horig ontal section taken about on the line w w of @orrespondin and like parts are referred to in the followilig description and indicated in both the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
in the drawings the numeral 1 designates a dome-shaped spark-arrester which is designed to be secured in an elevated position above the to of the locomotive-stack 2 by means of re -supports 3, secured to the upper edge of the said stack and to an inner annular rim 1* of the spark-arrester 1.
4 designates the smoke-box.
From both sides of the spark-arrester l and between the annular inner rim thereof and the outer wall of said arrester there are secured two downwardly-extendin pipes 5, the upper ends oi which, where they leave the space formed by the two walls of the spark-arrester, are inwardly curved or sloped as shown at 5*. Conducting-pipes 5 are secured at their upper ends by means of unions 7 to the lower ends of the pipes 5, and the said pipes 6 converge toward their lower ends and are secured by means of unions 7 in the two branches of a three-Way or t coupling 8.
The latter is secured at its lower end in a pipe 9, which leads throu h the smoke-box 4 and which is designed to ischarge the sparks or cinders to the track-rails, if desired. The
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. The combination with a Smokestack, of a dome-shaped plate rovided with an inner annular rim spaced "om its 'outer rini and concentric therewith, supporting rods secured at theirlower ends to the upper edge of the stack, and at, their upper ends to the said inner annular rim, whereby the outer rim of said plate will extend around or outside of the margin of said supporting-rods, conducting-pipes, secured at their up er ends to the dome-shaped plate between t 1e inner and outer rims thereof, and extending downwardly outside of the supporting-rods and to one side of the stack, and a pipe 9 to which the lower ends of the said conducting-pi es are connected, the said conducting-pipes eing provided at their upper ends with sloping portions 5 2. The combination with a smoke-stack and'a smokebox of a locomotive, of a domeshaped plate secured in an elevated position over the upper edge of the stack and providedwith an inner annular rim, downwardlyextending pipes 5 secured to said plate between the said inner rim and the outer wall thereof, conducting-pipes connected to the lower end of the first-named ipes, said conducting-pipes converging at t en lower ends,
.. end of said pipe, the branches of sai a plate secured to the smoke-box and interiorly screw threaded, a pipe 9 inserted in said plate and secured therein and having a screw-threaded end projecting thereabove,
I anda three-Way coupling having a screwthreaded engagement with the projecting coupling being respectively connected to the lower ccnverging ends of the said conductingp1 es. [o n testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
