Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
W. S. THOMPSON AND R. VINCENT LOVE, OF MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA.
IMPROVED METHOD OF FASTENING' HAMES.l
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 82,045, dated September 8, 1868.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that we, W. S. THOMPSON and R. VINCENT LovE, of the city of Montgomery, in the State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Method of Fastening Haines; and we do hereby declare that the following Vis a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in providing a hames-fastening with a latch and button, and so arranged as to increase its strength and reliability, and at the same time preserve its simplicity.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
We construct a bar, A, of iron or any suitable material, curved at both ends. In the end a works the pivoted latch B in the slot b, the latch having near its center the slot e, through. which passes the button c, and having at its curved end the dovetail o7, fitting against the shoulders i i of the slot b. Also, the hook D, with eyes j' f f, fitting over the curved end a of the bar A, and held in place by the latch B and button c, the latch acting as a spring against the button, thus preventing its being thrown from its position when the hames are from any cause compressed, which is frequently the case when the breastchains are fastened to the hames with tugs on the sides. When this is the case, without a proper support or spring the latch would fall open, and the loop, dropping from the hook, would at once disengage the animal from the harness. In our hook this is avoided, by securing the latch B with the button o, the construction of the latch being such as to form the spring, as stated.
As the weight of the draft is thrown on the latch, the small rivet in the end of the loophook, and on which the latch turns, would receive the whole strain but for the dovetail d on the end of the latch-hook, and which fits snugly into the slot in the bar A. This dovetail gives additional strength, relieves the rivet m, and forms the spring of the latch.
Our fastener can be permanently attached to any hanies in general use.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The bar A, latch B, hook D, and button c, constructed, operating, and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
-2. The dovtail d, in combination with the bar A and latch B, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The hook D, when arranged with the eyes f f f, and in combination with the bar A and latch B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
W. S. THOMPSON. R. VINCENT LOVE.
