Specification of Letters Patent.
rammed May s, 190e.
Application filed September 29, 1.905. Serial No. 280,653.
. he buckle embodying the invention is` specially advantageous for use by letter-carriers, as it readily admits of tightening and loosening the strap passing abut the bundle of letters or packages.
rihe Vinvention is of course susceptible of use in any instance where quick adjustment 'of the strap parts is desirable.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and .also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in whichi Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a buckle embodying thp invention applied. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal Ee'ctional View through the buckle and strap parts in operative connection therewith, the latter being broken away. the strap-engaging plate pivoted to the frame of the buckle.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters. f
In carrying out the invention and describing the construction illust-ratedin the drawings, the numeral l designates the strap to which the buckle is applied, and in the construction shown said strap is adapted for connection at its end-s by Ineans of the bu'ckle comprising this invention. The buckle cons'ists of the-frame 2, to one end of whichY is pivoteda strap-engaging plate 3', said plate being of peculiar form. The plate 3 is provided with a loop't at one end,*said loop receiving an end bar of the frame f2 and affording pivotal connection betwee'n the frame and the plate, as abovev me tioned. The plate 3 curves downwardly fr in the loop 4,
end of said frame.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of.
as shown at 5, the curved portion 5 bein located at a plane below the plane inclu ing the frame 2 to admit of connection of a loop 6, attached to an end of the lstrap i. In vother words, the loop 6, connected with the strap 1, is arranged beneath the frame 2, and a side of said yloop is seatedin the curved side portion of the part 5 of the plate 3, so that any tension on the end of the strap carrying the loop 6 is eective to force the plate 3 downwardly. The plate 3 is formed at its outer end, or the end opposite the loop 4, with integral laterally-projecting lugs 7, which formA fingerpieces adapted to be grasped in order to manipulate the plate 3. The lugs 7'incline upwardly and laterally from .the plate 3, and they also form stops to prevent the outer end of the plate from droppingthrough the frame of the buckle.
ln actual use when the strap l has been passed about the package or bundle to which it is applied the free end of the said strap is readily passed through the frame 2 between the outer end of the plate 8 and the adjacent Said 'free end of the strap can be pulled soas to tightly adjust the strap and release the tension of the free end thereof.
The plate 3 will engage with the strap in such a way as to frictionally bind thereagainst and hold the same properly adjusted.
The invention can be very cheaply Inanufacturedand is very easy to operate.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is As a new article of manufacture, a buckle comprising a frame, a strap-engaging -plate having one end thereof formed with a-loop receiving an end of the frame and affording pivotal connection therewith, the plate being curved. downwardly from the loop thereof Yand thence upwardly toward its free end, lugs projecting laterally from the free end of the plate and forming finger-pieces and stops as specified, and a loop arranged between the frame 'and the curved portion ofthe engagingplate and adapted to be connectedto a strap art. P In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses. I y
