Description
PATENTED MAY 8, 1906.
J. J. TRESIDDER. GOLUMN AND COLUMN CAP.
APPLICATION FILED OCT 22,1905
UNITED STATES OF NEW YORK.
- COLUMN 1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. TRESIDDER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the borough of Brooklyn and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Columns and Column-Caps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to furnish for fireproof buildings an improved column and column-cap which are constructed of metal and concrete in such a manner that the same can resist the destructive influence of a fire in a higher degree than cast-iron or other columns, while at the same time the strength of the same is considerably increased; and
' Y shell or-core, an exterior shell or jacket, an intermediate filling of concrete, a base, and a column-cap, which are attached, respectively, to the upper and lowerends of the composite column formed of the interior shell or core, 'exteriorshell, and concrete filling, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims..
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my improved column and column-cap. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in vertical transverse section on line 2 2, Fig. 1, through the beam supported on the columncap; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 33,Fi .1. 3 5 S' ar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings. I
Referring to the drawin s, a represents an interior tubular core, and% an exteriorshell or jacket, both core and jacket being made of caststeel or other suitable metal. The lower ends of the core and jacket are supported in the socketb of a base I), while their upper ends are inserted into the socket c of a column-cap c, which cap is provided with strengthening-ribs c"'at diametrically opposite sides. The lower end of the socket c is diminished in thickness, so as to form an annular space around the interior core or shell. The socket c of the column-cap 0 below the ribs 0 is diminished in diameter, so as to form a shoulder against which the exterior shell or jacket I) is fitted. The socket b of the base b as well as the socket c of the column-cap Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 23, 1905. Serial No. 283,913.
for thispurpose the invention consists of acolumn which comprises an interior tubular PATENT oEEroE.

core and are tightly attached thereto by screw-nuts d screwed over the threaded ends of the bolts, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The space between the core a and jacket I) is filled with concrete or other fireproof material.
The I-beams i are supported on the beamseats of the column-cap c and secured in position by an upright flange e, which is made integral with the cap and connected by a curved transverse portion e, said flanged portion bein attached by cross-bolts e to the Webs of t e I-beams. the column-cap serves as a base for supporting the next column above and is used in place of the base b, and so on, as the different The upper part of floors of the fireproof building are built. I 5 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A fireproof column, consisting of an interior core or shell, an exterior shell or jacket,
a base for supporting the lower ends of the 20 core and jacket, a columncap rovided with a'socket for the upper ends 0 the core and jacket, transversely-extending bolts for connecting the walls of the base and column-cap together and forms a compound column of;
5 jacket to t Having thus described my invention, I.
with the core and jacket, and a fireproof filling for the interior of the core and jacket.
2. A fireproof column, consisting of an interior core or shell, an exterior shell or jacket, a base for supporting the lower ends of the core and jacket, a column-cap provided with a socket fitting over the upper end of the core and an exterior circumferential shoulder for the exterior jacket or shell, the wall of said socket being reduced in thickness atits lower portion and spaced from the wall of said interior cor means for attaching the core and e sockets of the base and columncap, and a filling of fireproof material for the interior of the core and jacket.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN J. TRESIDDER.
