NEW YORK.
No. 820,156. Specification of FIhEPROOF COLUMN.
Letters Patent. Patented May 8, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that .1, JOHN J. Tnnsrnnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the borough of Brooklyn and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Fireproof Columns, of which t e following is a. specification.
This invention relates to on im rored fire proof column of that class in which metal and a. fireproof filling are combined and in which a column of any hei ht, as required I) the height between the core, may be m e up from stock without making the same in spe-- cial lengths; and for this pu' ose the invention consists of s. fireproo "co umn comprising'an interior pillar made in the shape cl :1 cross and composed cia. plurality of pieces, 7 each resided with webs at one or both ends, whic are bolted together so as to obtain any height of column, said interior cross-she ed pillar bein surrounded b on exterior jec et 7 or shell, as see for the p or and shell, 2. colproof lie in the space between the interior pillar ends ell. In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my improved fire roof column: Fig. 2' inc. side Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 3 3 1. Fig. 4 is a. detail perspective view of a portion of the interior pillar, and Figs. '5 and Similar letters of reference indicate corre- Zponding parts in the difierent figures of the Referr to the drawings, 0 represents an interior pi or or core, which is made cross-- she ed in section, rolled or cast in one integra. piece or ofitwo angle-irons abetting at their corners or of four on lo-irons placed alongside of each other and riveted together, so as to form a. cross-shaped pillar, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The interior pillar. a is made In certain lengths so as to corres ond'to the height between the fioors. and t en in- Sorted into c column-cop c, which is provided with a. socket c for the upper end of the iller, the space between the socket and pi lnr being filled up with fireproof filling, such as concrete. The iller a is then surrounded by on exterior shelFor g'ecket d and the interior of the pillar and the space between the some and the jacket filled with concrete, so that a. combined steel and concrete column is obtained. The lower end of the column is then set into the socket e of a, base e and connect ed thereto by a, bolt or otherwise.
When the height between the floors is t e interior pillar a, it may be made of two sections a a of diiferent lengths, which are provided at their adjacent ends with lateral V webs e having recesses c between the flanges 'of the cross-shaped pillar, as shown in Fig. 4. The webs are either cast integral with the pieces of a or 'made of separate angle-pieces and riveted to the endsof the cross-shaped pieces. In case the pieces a and s should notinske up the height between the floor a shorter intermediate (piece a of the some 'eross-seetion is inserts a, said intermediate or filling piece hevi we'bs'st both oxide; which webs are connecte by bolts a to the ad'acent webs of the pieces a a, as shown in 1; By thisei ghngement any desired height of column niey be obtained. The column-esp c is IOVldC-(l with a. socket for the next column a ove and with legs or flanges-for attaching the Lbeams that are supported on thebeem-seats of the column-esp 1n the usual gnenner.
By the construction described a compound column composed of metal end fireproof filh is ohteined;which can be made up in any height endwhich forms a. very strong, role ehle, end fireproof su port for the beams and framework supported thereon. Having thus described my invention. l claim as new and desire to secure by l letters Petent -A fireproof column, comprising on interior pillar or core embodying superposed upright sections of cross-shaped cross-section hevii lateral webs at their meeting ends, bolts for between the pieces a connecting said adjacent webs, a shell or In testimon 1 that I clai1n the foregoing as jacket surroundi said pillar or core, a 001- my invention have s1gned my name in presumn-oap to whic the uplper end of said ence of two subscribing Witnesses.
jacket is attached and whic is supported on J OHN J ,TRESIDDER. the upper end' of said pillar or core, a base for Witnesses:
said p lar and f'acket, and a fireproof filling PAUL GOEP'EL,
between said pi lar and said jacket; H. J. SUHRBIER.
