Description

PATENTED MAY 8, 1906- J. T. GOWLES.
BBDGLOTHES HOLDER. APPLICATION IYILED FEB.18.1905.
UN S TEhZ OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed femur-3 18,1905. Serial No. 246,222.
1'0 all whom it may cancer-m,
Be itknown that I, JOHN T. CowLns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicage, in the county of Cook and State of Illi- 'nois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedclothes-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This "invention relates to an improvement in bedclothes-holders. Its object is. to make a simple and efficient bedclothes-holder that will be convenient in use and economical in manufacture. I
The invention consists, substantially, in the construction set forth in thesubjoined s ecification and more particularlypointe out in the claims.
Like reference-letters desi nate the same parts in the several figures o' the drawings, in which- I Fi re 1 illustrates a rear perspective of the evice applied; to a metallic bedstead. Fig. 2 is a front elevationof the device. Fl 3 is a vertical section ofthe'device through one of the clamps and a plied to the bedstead, but with the be'dclbthesnot yet fastened. Fi 4 is an-end elevation of the device appliedto a bedstead, showing the bedclothes fastened thereby; Fi 5 isan end elevation of the device applie to a wooden bedstead.- Fig. G is a sectional view on line 6 6 of Fig. ii-looking in the direction of the readily be made of other material and of other sha e. These jaws are designed to be movab c with relationto each other, and in the form shown, to which the invention is not limited, the lower jaw A is adapted to be moved toward the upper jaw A", which latter projects slightly beyond the jaw A, and between said aws the bedclothes are adapted to be clamped. A simple manner of providing for this movement is shown in the draw ings, and which consists in. securing to the lower jaw.A a guide pin or rod B, which depends from such jaw and passes throu h an opening in the clamping-bracket C, the atter depending from and being secured to the upper jaw A and having a vertical extension bent at its lower end to form a hook, and thereby constituting a part of the clampingbracket. This pin B may also pass through the eye of a bolt D, the shank of which bolt passes horizontally through the lower extenin position and at a point by screwing uponit a thumb-nut E. It is evident that when this rod is adjusted at any suitable vertical Osibracket C and to be held up against tho. bed- Patented May a, ieoe.
sion of the clamping-bracket and is secured 6o tion to cause thelowcr jaw, to whichit 1s'at, ,tached, to move in the recess formed by the clothes and clamp them between said jaw and the upper jaw that said rod may be held in this position by tightening the thumb-nut, and thereby drawlng the eyebolt firmly against the rod. The clampingbracket C is preferably fplaced in pairs-thatis, one rear.
the pairof jaws-and is conven- 1 ientl'y of bow shape, so as to provide a lateral edge end 0 recess into which to tuck the bedclothes after they are passed over the upper jaw, as shown,
desirable when the attachment is to be secured to an iron bedstead, but may be ornit ted when it is to be secured to a wooden bedstead, as shown in Fig. 5. This clam ing -or fastening bolt or jaw I has a hoot at I one end to grasp one edge of the angleiron of the bedstead, and its shank passes through the lower extension of the clampingbracket, and outer end isthreaded to adapt it to receive a thumb-nutF, by;
means of which thumb-nut its hooked end may be drawn tightl wa 'ainst the angle-iron f of the bedstead. The lamping device then consists of the two jaws arranged at right.
angles to each other, as shown In the ,drawings, one consisting of the lower hooked end of the clam ing-bracket C and the other of the hooked on of the clam ing or fastenin 'bolt or jaw I.
It will thus e seen that a 0 amp ing device well adapted to secure the bedclothes attachment to the angle-iron of the bedstead is provided, and in case it is desired to secure the attachment to a wooden body screws or bolts may be passed through the rear of the bow of the bracket and into the.
wooden footboard, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
When the device is applied to a metallic bedstead, it has been found convenient to use the clamping-brackets, as particularly shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, the hooked ends of each of which engage the edges of the angle-iron and are *thensecured tightly in place by the thumb-nut, as before stated.
The clothes-holding jaws may be adjusted in be 0nd the ot er edg at suitable distances apart to properly clamp the clothes and be he d in such position by' the thumb-nut E, as before set forth, and then .the clothes will assume the position'shown in bed-clothes in the angular. recess between them, and thus prevent such clothes from be-' ing disturbed by the person sleeping during the night; I
When the device is attachedto a wooden bed, the direction of opening to the bow is reversed and the bedclothes introduced directl between the jaws, as shown in Fig. 5 of the awings, instead of passing over one jaw and between the two jaws, as shown in Fig. 4 of such drawings.
It is obvious that many variations may be made in the details of attachment without departing from the principle of the same, and therefore I .do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction shown and'described.
, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device of the class described, compris-' ing a supporting-bracket provided with a lateral ofiset portion in its body to form an opening therein, a pair of jaws operatively related to the edges of the opening, one of said jaws being adjustable, with relation to the other jaw and movable across the opening in the bracket, and means 0 eratively related to the adjustable jaw for ho ding the same in its adjusted position, to clamp the bedclothes within the offset portion. I
' 2. A device of the class described, comprising a su porting-bracket, a portion thereof interme iate its ends being is osed out of the plane in its body to form a ateral opening therein, one ed e of the opening pro ecte, jaws operatively re ate' to the edges of said openin the jaw on the shorter edge being adjustab? mounted with relation to the other jaw, and means operatively related to the ad ustable jaw for holding said jaw in its adjusted position, to clamp the bedclotheswithin the o ening.
' 3. A device of the class describe comprising a supporting-bracket, provided with a lat-' erally-o adjusta adapted en space intermediate its ends, an le jaw movable in the space and eratively related to t ad ustable. jaw for holding the same in 1ts adjusted position;
