Description

PATBNTED MAY 1, 1906.
C. W. LASHER. POT COVER. APILIOATION FILED-AUG. 20, 1904.
UNITED STATES PATENT our-non.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1, 1906.
Application filed August 20, 1904. Serial No. 221.5 75.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. LASHER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Pot-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pot-covers; and its object is to produce .a device of this class which shall have certain advantages which will appear more fully and at large in the course of this specification.
To this end my invention consists in certain novel features, which are shown in the accompanying drawings as embodied in my preferred form of construction.
In the aforesaid drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device. ig. 2 is a perspective view of the handle removed from the cover, and Fig 3 is a section in the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A is the body of my improved cover, the same being ordinarily circular in form and formed from sheet metal in the ordinary way. The body A is provided with two opposite parallel slots, and the metal forming the body is stamped up outside said slots to form overhanging lips a.
B indicates the handle of my'improved device, the same being formed of sheet metal and having two outwardly-projecting ears I) in the same'plane. The ears I) are slightly narrower through the main'portion of the handle, so that shoulders are formed upon the handle which abut against the upper face of the cover, the -slots through which the ears are passed being only Wide enough for the ears. The handle is thereby connected to the cover without the use of any extra clip or other attachment to secure the handle in place. its withdrawal in an upward direction, and the shoulders prevent it from being pushed through the slots. Furthermore, this con: struction permits the handle to rise directly from the cover, as do the ordinary handles, which are soldered or otherwise ermanently secured to the cover. The handle thus formed is convenient to grasp, and its appearance when in position on the cover is not marred by any unsightly device for attaching it thereto.
In assembling my improved pot-cover one of the ears I) is thrust through one of the slots The overhanging portions or prevent I in the body A and under one of the ears a.
The ends of the handle are then sprung together, and the second ear I) is thrust through theother slot in the body of the cover and under the other overhanging lip a. The handle is made of sufficiently elastic material to hold itself in position after being so placed. When the ears upon the handle pass beneath the slightly-raised portions of the cover, they draw the shoulders firmly down upon the latter, preventing any looseness or possibility of rattling. The handle may be instantly removed or replaced, using only the hand which grasps it, and the parts have absolutely no joint or crevice, and hence they may be readily and perfectly washed.
My improved cover is particularly advantageous for the reason that, in ship ing, a large number of the bodies can be pilhd up in a small space and a large number of the handles can be nested together and the corresponding parts can be assembled by the dealer, Without the use of any tools whatever, into a strong and rigid device.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of this construction Without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not, therefore, intend to limit myself to the specific details herein shown and described.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with an arch-like, resilient and detachable handle having at its ends outwardly and oppositely projecting ears and provided with shoulders alongside said ears, to rest upon a cover, of a cover cut through along approximately parallel lines conforming to said projecting ears and stamped up outside said lines to allow said ears to pass horizontally beneath the raised portions of the cover.
2. The combination with a cover cut through along two lines upon opposite sides of its center, tachable handle extending from one line to the other, provided with shoulders resting upon the cover alongside the cuts there' through and having broad flat ears projecting through the cover at said cuts, extend- I05 ing therefrom oppositely outward and lying closely against the lower face of the cover, and adapted to be withdrawn by springing the ends of the handle inwardly.
3. The combination with a cover cut 110 of an arch-like resilient and deupon the cover, and substantially filling the recesses formed by the embossing.
In witness whereof I have signed the above application for Letters Patent, at Daven ort, 15
in the county of Scott and State of owa, this 15th day of August, A. D. 1904.
CHARLES W. LASHER.
