Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LoUIs GRILK, a citizen of the United States of America, resident of Davenport, county of Scott, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pot-Covers, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which* Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the bail raised, Fig. 2 a perspective view showing the bail lying down against the cover and Fig. 3 a detail perspective showing more clearly the construction of the ear.

This invention is designed to provide means for attaching the bail to the cover whereby when raised it will automatically lock itself in that position and when folded down against the cover will hold itself in that position and be out of the way and lthus permit the covers to be packed closely together one upon the other for shipping purposes, as more fully hereinafter set forth.

Referring to the drawing annexed by reference-characters a desi 'nates the cover which is of the ordinary s eet metal kind, b the bail, and c the bail ears or housings. The bail is a piece of bowed spring wire whose ends are bent outwardly to form pivots Z9" which work in the horizontal tubular portions c of ears. The tendency ofthe ends of the bail is to spring outward radially and thus keep the extremities of the bail normally pressed against the inner ends of the tubular portions c of the ears.

The tubular parts c of the ears are formed by bending upwardly a piece of sheet metal, whose ends are passed radially' through separate slots in the cover spaced from said tubular parts formin flat bearing surfaces at each side of sait arts and are mashed flat against the under side of the cover, or stamped or embossed in, or otherwise fastened to the cover, thus rigidly affxing the ears to the cover. The inner end of each tubular part c is provided with a notch c2 in its highest point so that when bail is raised to an upright position its ends will snap into said notches and thus lock the bail in that position. From this notch the edge of the tubular portion or socket slopes 0E in each direction slightly to form depressions c3 adjacent to the surface of the cover so that whichever way the bail is swung in folding it down against the cover its ends will spring into these lower notches or de ressions and thus hold the bail in its foldec position flat against the upper face of the cover. It will be understood that a slight force will be required to shift the bail from one position to the other and that it is desirable that the notches that hold the bail in its upright position shall be deeper than the other notches so as to thereby acquire a greater force to throw the bail down than to raise it to operative position.

It will be observed that formin the ears c tubular, and passing their en s through separate slots in the cover and mashing them. against the under side of the cover, provldes ears that are not only rigid themselves, but are also rigidly secured in position, thereby obviating any danger of their being bent outwardly or displaced from the spring handle.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A cover plate, provided with a housing formed of sheet metal, and having vertical side walls and a convex to of e ual width, the inner edges of said side wals and top being provided with notches, said housing having extensions that project horizontally along the face of the cover, passing through slots in said cover which are spaced apart and clamped under said cover, whereby a rigidly secured upstanding housing having bearing surfaces at each side of its tubular portion is provided, and a spring bail pivoted in said housing and adapted to engage the notches therein.

2. A metal cover plate provided with a pair of slots, a housing bent up of sheet metal and comprising a pair of uprightl walls connected by an arched top wall, these walls being provided with a series of notches in one edge and the lower ends of the upright walls being provided with extensions which lie flat against the upper face of the cover plate and have their extremities extending through the aforesaid slots and bent up against the under side of the cover plate, said slots being spaced away from said housing, whereby a rigid upstanding housing having extended bearing surfaces at each side is provided, and a spring bail pivoted in said housing and adapted to engage he notches therein, for the purpose set Orth.

3. A cover comprising a plate, a spring Wire bail having angular pivot-ends, and a sheet metal means pivotally attaching` the bail to the upper face of the cover, said means consisting of alined sheet inetalho-usings for said angular ends, one of said hous` ings being provided with a notch in its edge into which the part of the hail adjacent thereto engages When the bail stands upright and out of Which it is forced when the bail 'is turned to one side out of its operative position, yeach of said housings consisting of a pair of separated upright Walls and a curved connecting top -Wal-l, the lower ends of the Vupright Walls being extended horizontally and lying flat against the upper face `of the cover plate and having their flat extremities extending through spaced slots in the cover plate and bent up against the under side of the cover plate, for the purposes set forth.
