UNIED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINED TOBACCO-PLUG HOLDER AND CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
:atenteci lvlay 1, 1906.
Application filed April 15,1904. Serial No. 208,331.
To 117/ whom it 'nmy concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES HENDERsox (01313, a subject of the King of Great Bxitain and Ireland, residing at Christcluirch, in the Provincial Dist ict of Canterbury, in the Colony of New Zealand, have invented a new and useful Combined T obacco-Plug Holder and (utter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention is for the purpose of providing in a combined form a receptacle wherein a plug of tobacco may be placed and from which ccJtain quantities sufficient for a single smoke can be cut or sliced by a cutter mounted upon the said receptacle.
My invention consists of a rectangularshaped case of such a size that a plug of tobacco shall easily lit therein. The plug rests upon an elevator-plate that threads with a screw longitudinally situated in a portion of the receptacle. The screw is operated by a knife upon its upper end acting as a handle that at once slices the tobacco and actuates the feed-screw.
The shape and size of the receptacle will vary slightly with various brands of tobacco, and it may be of any suitable materialsuch for instance, as electroplated ware, wood, mica, or a transparent material.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a general view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of same, and Fig. 3 is a view of the fee .lscrew and elevator.
The rectangular-shaped box or holder a for the tobacco-plug i) has a narrow chamber c at one side, wherein is mounted a screwfeed (I. 'llhreading with said screw is a plate c, that moves upon it when the screw is revolvetl.
Upon the upper end of the screw (1 is a knifef, fulcrumed thereon, so that when the knife is revolved the screw will cause the plate 6 to move up or down its length, according to the direction of travel of the knife. The screw is designed so that the plate a will be elevated by a motion of the knife from right to left.
The knife may preferably be provided with an extension to form a handle whereby it may be more easily operated, and the handle is hinged to the knife, so that it can be brought over to the position shown in Fig. 2 when not in use.
A tobacco-plug b is inserted in the case (L and rests upon the elevator-plate e, that has previously been lowered to the bottom of the case. \Vhen it is desired to obtain a cut of tobacco from the plug, the knife fis rotated once around its fulcrumpoint and. slices off a certain amount, and at the same time that it cuts the tobacco it will rotate the screw (Z, that will cause the elevator e to rise, thereby feeding the plug Z) forward for another cut.
Having now particularly described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an apparatus for cutting plug-tobacco, in combination a case having a longitudinal partition therein dividing the case into a large and a small chamber, a feed-screw lo eated in the small chamber, said screw having a squared head projecting from the top of the case, an elevator-plate adapted to move upon the screw and extending into the large chamber, a knife having a hole at one end fitting over the head of the screw so as to rotate the screw and a handle pivoted upon the knife andv adapted to be folded thereon.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES HENDERSON COBB.
