To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that LFRANK MCINTYRE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Bronx, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Match-Box and Cigar-Tip Cutter, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement IO in boxes, and relates more particularly to a combined match-box and cigar-tip cutter in which the construction is such that the cigartip may be readily inserted into position to be removed and in which the severed portion [5 will drop exterior to the box and be readily freed therefrom.

A further object is to provide the cover of the match-box of such shape that it will ex? pose a considerable portion of the cigar-tip- 2o cutting blade, the exposed portion of the said blade being roughened to form a strikingsurface of the head of the match.

A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings,

in which Figure 1 represents a view of the combined match-box and cigar-tip cutter in side elevation, with the cutting-blade closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the cutting-blade raised in position to receive the cigar between it and the box, the upper portion of the box being broken away to more clearly show theinterior structure thereof; and Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section taken in the plane of the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

The match-box herein shown consists of a body portion A and a cover B, hinged thereto, the said box being composed of sheet metal or other suitable material, the shape of the box being such that it will readily receive and retain matches therein.

The cover B of the box is provided with a narrow slot I), extending lengthwise along its top, and acigar-tip-cutting blade 0 is hinged 5 at 0 within the cover, so as to swing upwardly and downwardly through the said slot 1). In the present instance I have shown the cutting-blade as hinged in a block 0, located in the front end of the cover.

The cutting-blade O is provided with the usual semicircular recess 0 having a cutting edge, between which recess and the edges of the slot b the cigar-tip is severed when the cutting-blade is swung downwardly.

The free end of the cutting-blade G is pro- 5 vided with a suitable thumbpiece or extension 0 whereby the cutting-blade may be raised' into position to receive the cigar to be cut.

The cutting-blade O is roughened, asshown at 0 upon one or both of its faces along that portion of the blade which is exterior to the box when the blade is in its closed position for use in igniting the match.

In the present instance I have shown a considerable portion of the sides of the blade C exposed by curving the top of the cover B of the box inwardly between its front and back.

The great advantage obtained in roughening the steel cutting-blade of the cigar-cut- 7o ter is that I am enabled to procure a much sharper abrasive surface for insuring the ignition of the head of the match than it is possible to obtain upon the box itself.

It is evident that changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence Ido not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth; but

What I claim is The combination with a match-box comprising a body portion and a cover hinged thereto, of a cigar-tip-cutt-ing blade hinged in the cover in position to sever the cigar 8 5 between it and the cover, the said cuttingblade being roughened to form a sharp abrasive match-ignition surface, substantially as set forth;
