Specification of Letters Patent.

To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. BROOKS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have made certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Car- Strap and Signal-Rod Support, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in combined carstraps and signal-rod supports and it consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the operating-rod. Fig. 3 is a front elevation. of a portion of the strap-rail, showing the portions of the brackets and sleeves. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the brackets. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the sleeve connected with the pulling-strap of the fare-register. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the sleeve having an operating-handle connected therewith. F ig.
7 is a perspective view of one of the brackets, and Flg. 8 is a similar view of one of the sections of the strap-rail.
In the practical application of my invention I provide a strap-rail comprising a plurality of hollow sections d, the ends of the sections being screw-threaded, as at d. The sections are arranged in alinement and spaced apart from each other, and the individual sections are supported independently of each other by means of the brackets e. The brackets e comprise a tubular portion 6, having one of its ends internally screw-threaded, as at e for engaging the screw-threaded end of the section and being provided with an arm 6 whereby it may be attached to the wall of the car. The attaching arms of the adjacent brackets are oppositely disposed with respect to each other, the arm of one bracket extending upwardly and the other downwardly, the brackets upon each section being similarly arranged with respect to the brackets upon the other sections. The adjacent brackets are connected by means of a sleeve f, having a square opening f longitudinally thereof and having its ends reduced, as at f for entering the adjacent ends of the tubular part of the brackets. That part of the sleeve f 3 between the reduced ends thereof is of greater diameter than the diameter of the tubular part of the bracket and projects beyond the face thereof and is provided with an operating handle f depending therefrom. An operating-rod g, square in cross-section, is arranged within the alined sections of the strap-rail, the rod traversing the square opcningf in the sleeve. By this construction the sleeve f not only serves to connect the strap-rail sections together, but serves as an operating means for the rod 9. The depending arm f of the sleeve on that end of the strap-rail adjacent to the fare-register is provided with a hook f engaging a ring 0 on the pullingstrap 0 of the register.
As shown in Fig. 7, the end brackets of the strap-rail differ from the intermediate brackets, the tubular part being merely a cap for engaging the reduced end of the sleeve, the brackets being in other respects similar to the remaining brackets. The sections of the strap-rail between the brackets are provided with the ordinary straps h.
It will be evident from the description that when the sections of my strap-rail are in place they form a continuous rail supported in a very efficient manner by the oppositelydisposed attaching-arms of the brackets. The parts of the rail are easily assembled, one section being fixed in place, after which the remaining sections may be easily adjusted with respect thereto. The rail is also capable of indefinite expansion or may be made as short as required.
By providing an upwardly-turned hook f 5 my improved strap-rail could be arranged to ring a signal-bell, the ringing of the bell being produced by a movement of the arm in a reverse direction to the movement of operating the register.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. In combination a strap-rail comprising a plurality of hollow alined sections spaced apart from each other and having screw-threaded ends, means for supporting the individual sections comprising brackets having a tubular portion screw-threaded at one end for engaging the end of the section, and an attaching arm integral with the bracket, the attaching-arms on the adjacent brackets being oppositely disposed with respect to each other, a square operating-rod within the sections, means for connecting the adjacent brackets and for operating the rod, comprising a sleeve having a square opening for engaging the rod, and having reduced ends for entering the tubular portion of the brackets, a depending arm on the sleeve, one of said arms adjacent to the end of the strap-rail being provided with a hook and a ulling-strap engaging the hook.
2. n combination, a strap-rail comprising a plurality of hollow alined sections spaced apart from each other, brackets at either end of the individual sections for supporting the same, and comprising a tubular portion for receiving the end of the section, and an attaching-arm connected with the tubular portion, the attaching-arms at the opposite ends of the sections being oppositely disposed with respect to each other, a fare-register-operating rod within the sections, a sleeve between the adjacent brackets and having reduced ends for entering the tubular portions thereof, means whereby to oscillate the sleeve, and mrzlans whereby the sleeve may oscillate the r0 3. In combination, a strap-rail, comprising a plurality of hollow alined sections spaced apart from each other, brackets at either end of the individual sections for supporting the same, and comprising a tubular portion to receive the end of the section, and an attaching-arm integral with the tubular portion, the attaching-arms on the adjacent brackets being oppositely disposed with respect to each other, a fare-registeroperating rod within the sections, and means for operating the rod and for connecting the adjacent brackets.

In combination, a strap-rail, comprising a plurality of hollow alined sections spaced apart from each other, brackets at either end of the individual sections for supporting the same, and comprising a tubular portion for receiving the end of the section, and an attaching-arm integral with the tubular portion, the attaching-arms at the opposite ends of the sections being oppositely disposed with respect to each other, a fare-register operatingmeans within the sections, and means connecting the tubular portions of the brackets for actuating the register operating means.

In combination, a strap-rail comprising a plurality of tubular alined sections spaced apart from each other, brackets at either end of the individual sections for supporting the same, and comprising a tubular portion for receiving the end of the section, and an attaching-arm connected with the tubular portion, means within the sections for operating a fare-register, a sleeve between the adjacent 7. In combination, a strap-rail comprising a plurality of tubular alined sections spaced apart from each other, a fare-register-operat ing rod within the sections, a sleeve between the adjacent ends of the sections, means whereby to oscillate the sleeve, means 'whereby the sleeve may actuate the rod, and means connecting theends of the sleeve to the ends of the adjacent sections for support ing the parts.
8. In combination, a strap-rail comprising a plurality of tubular alined sections spaced apart from each other, brackets for supporting the individual sections comprising a tubular portion for receiving the ends of the sections, and an attachingarm'connected with the tubular portion, a fare-register-opcrating means, and means supported by the tubular portions of the brackets for actuatin said operating means.
